There was a famous experiment done back in the fifties.
Where they blasted subliminal messages to a movie audience.
And, as the mythology goes, they sold more coke and popcorn to people because of these subliminal messages.
If you are a big fan of conspiracy theories, the idea of subliminal messages is pretty compelling.
That the elites are somehow programming us, or brainwashing us to be obedient citizens.
Even that movie “They Live” where you could wear special sunglasses and see all the aliens that were living among us had that same idea.
That not only could you see the aliens with your special glasses, but you could see all these brainwashing messages on all the billboards.
But are subliminal messages so powerful?
Based on the popcorn and coke study, it would seem so.
But think about this from an audience perspective.
You’re sitting in a movie theater.
Something you’ve done plenty of times before.
It’s very likely you’ve eaten popcorn and have drunk coke in that situation before.
Drinking coke and eating popcorn in a movie theater is a strong anchor.
And you can SMELL the popcorn.
Nose To Brain Connection
The first thing you smell when you walk into a movie theater is popcorn.
Popcorn and coke represent the a dream come true for our taste buds.
Salty, crunchy, buttery grain.
Sweet tasting soda with a shot of caffeine.
Let’s say a theater holds 500 seats.
And it’s about half empty.
And 100 of them, on average, get up and buy popcorn and coke.
And then the subliminal messages start up.
And another twenty people get up and buy some popcorn and coke.
So, they can legitimately say that subliminal messages increase popcorn and coke sales by 20%.
This sounds pretty terrifying!
That can brainwash 20% of the people who do anything!
We poor humans are helpless!
But those twenty people were likely already thinking about buying popcorn and coke.
They likely already have done so in the past.
They can smell it.
They are thinking about.
So, a more accurate headline would be:
Subliminal messages can get people to do what they are JUST ABOUT to do!
Not My Fault
But why do we seem to believe that we can be so easily brainwashed?
Maybe it absolves us of responsibility?
Maybe it triggers the “it’s not my fault, it’s society’s fault” idea.
Maybe it makes it EASIER for us to accept our mediocrity without feeling the need to try?
One of the most common “belief” about a belief that has been “programmed” into us is all our negative money beliefs.
What if these were programmed into us JUST LIKE the popcorn subliminals?
What if we are PRE-DISPOSED to find negative money beliefs?
So we soak up those “money is evil” beliefs like a SPONGE.
What if money WASN’T evil?
What if was the BEST THING EVER?
Not easy, not magic, but part of our nature?
What would THAT mean?
