Similar Structure
There’s an old video on YouTube called the “Axis of Awesome” or something like that.
It is a demonstration that nearly all popular western music in the past couple decades have the SAME basic chord progression.
If you study the structure of stories, you’ll find the same thing.
On a somewhat surface level, there are only seven types of stories.
But even deeper, they all follow, more or less, a Hero’s Journey structure.
The character starts out normal, but missing a few things.
They are forced onto a path of discovery.
Then the figure out what’s what, what the problem is, etc.
Then they have to solve the problem and come out the other side a better human.
We resonate these stories because we ALL have problems to overcome.
One way to think of the “storytelling instinct” is as a way to come up with IDEAL role models to model our lives after.
We all have the same desires, the same fears, the same dreams.
We all want better lives but we’re either too afraid to too clueless to make those better lives come true.
Externalizing
We tend to blame the world or our situation for whatever we lack.
We tend to be crippled by things like “opportunity costs.”
It doesn’t just take time to go after what we want.
As soon as we start toward any goal, we are essentially deciding NOT to get all the other things we COULD be getting with that same time and effort.
This is VERY problematic in modern dating.
I could go out with this person, but what if I miss out on somebody even BETTER?
And given the low moral quality of many people today, we DO go out with person X UNTIL somebody better comes along.
Everybody has these same structures in our brains.
The filters through which we see the world
Which CAN, if you leverage them, give you a huge opportunity.
Since you pretty much know the story of everybody’s life.
A story of trial and error and success and failure and worry and shame and anger and a few glimmers of hope along the way.
Now, you NEVER talk about this stuff.
But just knowing this structure is there will give you a HUGE advantage.
