Not Vulcans
Humans love to believe in our own logical decision making.
But in reality, most of us are driven by emotions.
Unless you are making a tough decision about a big purchase, like a house, then your decisions are emotional.
If we were purely logical, we wouldn’t have evolved.
We NEED our irrational brains to survive.
We NEED to believe we are better than the evidence suggests, so we can keep pushing through.
This is why we LOVE stories about underdogs coming from behind to destroy the evil villains.
But sometimes, this is not so good.
One of the reasons everybody pretty much HATED Socrates was that he kept proving that EVERYBODY was wrong.
About pretty much anything.
We don’t like that our ideas aren’t LOGICALLY true.
Plenty of old school stoics, all who took their inspiration from Socrates, were banned, exiled or just killed.
My Idea Is Better
If you are having a political argument with somebody, consider this “unhappy” idea.
Both arguments, yours and theirs, are likely COPIED from TV or other authorities.
They feel good in your brain.
They feel good in their brain.
Just CONSIDER the idea that two people arguing about politics is kind of like two people arguing over the best pizza topping.
You both LIKE your ideas very much.
But you don’t really have any real logical, rational reasons WHY you like your ideas.
This is why we say things like:
I’m Right
Think about it!
If you don’t understand, I can’t explain it to you!
Go ahead, look it up! I’m right!
But here’s the good news.
If you truly accept and UNDERSTAND this about how we think, you can leverage this aspect of human nature.
Like REALLY leverage it.
For example, the Milgram experiment showed that 2/3 of people will BLINDLY obey an authority figure.
And the Asch conformity tests showed that 2/3 of people will go RIGHT ALONG with the crowd.
Even when they KNOW it’s the wrong thing to do.
So what happens when you COMBINE these two?
Brainless Audience
You take an average person and put them in a crowd who is also following an authority figure.
It is very, very difficult to NOT go with the crowd and copy the ideas of the authority figure.
But it gets even BETTER!
The specific ideas and beliefs, coming FROM that authority figure CANNOT be very complex.
They MUST be simple enough for the hive mind to understand.
Most of whom would FAIL an algebra class or a formal logic class.
So, how can you leverage this aspect of human nature?
Rule The Crowd
BE the authority figure.
You don’t need big and complex ideas.
All you need are ideas that make people FEEL good.
And BOOM!
You’ll be a recognized authority.
