Critical Costs
Economics is called the dismal science.
Why?
Because it doesn’t lead to happy endings.
Regular science is all about inventing things.
Understanding the way the world works so we can make better stuff.
Better microwaves.
Better CGI tech.
Better video games.
Faster transportation.
But economics?
The main point of economics is that EVERYTHING costs SOMETHING.
Even things like opportunity costs are a pain.
If you’re in a restaurant, EVERYTHING looks good, and you can’t decide.
It’s hard to decide because once you choose ONE THING, you can’t have anything else.
Start And Finish
But even deeper, once you choose, it takes away the PRE-CHOICE pleasure.
Being about to eat is a good feeling.
Being about to eat and having ALL KINDS of delicious foods in FANTASTIC.
But once you choose, it’s the beginning of the end.
The food comes, and it smells fantastic.
But once you take the first bite, another horrific law of economic kicks in.
The law of diminishing returns.
Every subsequent bite is LESS pleasurable than the last.
After each bite, you are LESS hungry.
And that “I’m about to eat” feeling becomes less compelling.
And before you know it?
POOF!
Time to pay the bill.
Subconscious Calibration
Most of the time, the costs, the opportunity costs, etc. are perfectly rational and acceptable.
Their are costs involved in being in a happy relationship.
But for most people, the benefits OUTWEIGH the costs, so it’s OK.
But in other situations, we silly humans very much like to PRETEND there are no costs.
One thing we LOVE is step by step instructions.
It’s TERRIFYING to think for yourself, take action, and accept complete responsibility.
I don’t mean this in a bad way.
This is how we managed to survive for tens of thousands of years.
We are pack animals.
We very much follow the crowd.
If we didn’t follow the crowd way back when, we’d have gone extinct.
So today, in the short term, it SEEMS like a good thing to do.
Dangerous Advice
A comfortable thing to do.
To let others tell you what you should do.
The kinds of things you should go after.
The things you should do to get the kinds of things you should want.
But there is a critical difference between today and way back when.
Back then there was ONLY one thing.
Food.
Today, there are a kajillion more things you COULD go after.
Claim Your Brain
But you have to choose them for yourself.
You have to go after them in your own way, and at your own pace.
Nobody will tell you how, specifically, to do this.
But once you SLOWLY ease into following your own chosen goals, for your own reasons, life will be very, very enjoyable.
