Specific vs. Meta
There are very specific skills you can learn.
And there are very meta skills you can learn.
Specific skills are things like a specific martial art, or a specific kind of software.
Meta skills are things like mathematics, logical thinking, how to cook, general mechanical skills.
Meta skills are much easier to generalize.
Specific skills, not so much.
Sometimes this can be tragic.
All Eggs One Basket
You can work for ten or twenty years in an industry.
Building up very lucrative, highly specialized skills.
So much you are the King or Queen of that specific skill.
You are in high demand, you get high pay, and a lot of respect.
But then the industry shifts on a dime.
Maybe a new invention, or a new law or a completely new paradigm shows up out of nowhere.
And your entire career is gone.
Poof!
This, most definitely, sucks.
This is why it’s good to always have a plan B, just in case.
Meta Social Skills
In the realm of social skills, there are also meta skills and specific skills.
But since social skills are much more flowing that any kind of technical skills, meta skills are generally much better.
Good meta skills in any social area are things like confidence, thinking on your feet, having a quick wit, etc.
But there are also meta-meta skills
The kind of skills that don’t require any kind of speaking, or even conscious thinking.
The kind that radiate FROM you before you even make eye contact.
The kind people can just sense.
Normally, people experience this kind of feeling haphazardly.
For example, suppose you just finished a long negotiation with your boss, and their boss.
They spent the last three hours telling you how vital you were to the company.
Why would they do this?
Maybe they heard a rumor you were being recruited the competition.
And after the three hour negotiation, you got a huge raise.
And PROOF that this billion dollar, global company is DESPERATE to keep you.

This makes you feel REALLY good.
So when you stop by the pub on your way home, you don’t need to talk to anybody.
Your posture, your face, your smile the friendliness of your eye contact, THIS says it all.
So when the super hot bar tender sees you and comes over, beaming a gorgeous smile, it doesn’t even phase you.
Gorgeous girls that smile at guys almost always sense SOME kind of neediness.
But not you.
Not then.
What she says or does or doesn’t say or doesn’t do simply CANNOT compare to how you feel.
Everybody Knows
And she SENSES this from you.
Which makes her VERY interested in you.
And makes EVERYBODY else interested in you.
