I’m Falling
How does one fall in love?
First, take a look at that phrase.
“Fall” in love.
According to a theory of metaphors, we think of love as a container.
Since we use it with the preposition “in.”
Kind of like being “in” a meeting.
George Lakoff wrote a book about how much we use metaphors without realizing it.
Any intangible noun IS a metaphor.
Love is a metaphor.
We use love grammatically as a noun.
A person, place, or thing.
But there are REAL things, like burritos and unicycles.
Imaginary Nouns
And there are INTANGIBLE things like love.
Intangible meaning they don’t exist in the physical world.
Right off the bat we’re getting pretty metaphysical.
A meeting is intangible, but pretty simple.
A bunch of people, in a group, usually planned ahead of time, to talk about a specific thing.
The meeting room is real.
The chairs, the table, the coffee pot, the equipment, all real.
But suppose the meeting runs from 3:00 to 4:00.
Where is the meeting at 2:59?
Where is the meeting at 4:01?
Suppose there are three people in the meeting.
And when four o’clock comes, and all the people stand up and start talking about their weekend plans, what happened to the meeting?
Suppose they all walk together to the elevator.
And they are all talking about the SAME movie they are planning on seeing, in their own way and in their own time.
Has the meeting changed?
Poof!
Or has evaporated?
Something simple like a meeting can become pretty metaphysical.
But what about love?
We are IN love, like we are IN a meeting.
(or IN trouble….or IN debt….)
But how do we GET into love?
We go to a meeting.
We schedule a meeting.
But love?
We fall.
Didn’t See It Coming
Falling kind of implies that it happens UNEXPECTEDLY.
But how does it happen.
You know how.
You’ve felt it.
You see somebody and they make you feel a certain way.
But then something happens.
You start to remember them differently.
You remember specific things about them.
Their smile, their voice, their touch.
And next time you see them, you’re NERVOUS.
What the heck is going on?!
Happy Happy Love
And if you see them, and you sort of suspect they feel the same way about you?
No longer can you think like a normal human.
Your brain and heart is ON FIRE.
And if you finally have PROOF they feel the same way?
Nothing is better.
Now the money question:
Do we have to wait and hope and PRAY that we, one day, FALL in love?
Or is there another way?
You’d be surprised.
