Embrace Limits
Working within constraints is something we tend to avoid.
But at the same time, constraints can help create fantastic results.
For example, if you are making a raunchy R rated comedy, you can do a lot of gags.
Sex gags, f-bomb gags, etc.
But if you were making a PG comedy, you’d feel like you had less “comedy” potential.
But at the same this, this could force you to think of comedy that would be funnier within those constraints.
And sometimes, PG comedies are way funnier, and way more “sexual” from a subtle standpoint.
There’s a related idea from economics.
The idea of “moral hazard.”
This is when you KNOW you are going to be bailed out or protected if you make any mistakes.
Safety Nets
Which tends to INCREASE the likelihood of making a mistake.
This is “kind of like” the f-bomb sex comedies.
Since you won’t get in trouble for anything, you don’t NEED to think too carefully about how to construct the jokes.
But if you are CONSTRAINED by the PG rules, you must think very carefully when making the jokes.
Which means you can be very, very clever in your humor.
This doesn’t always happen, of course.
Constraints Made Us
And from a HUGE big picture idea, humans evolved under very HARSH constraints.
For tens of thousands of years, we all lived under a very harsh, “you don’t kill you don’t eat rule.”
Which forced EVERYTHING through a very, very tight inter-generational filter.
Before the agricultural revolution, if you were a random human, there was only a 50% chance you would have kids that would have kids.
So that very strict constraint forced us to DIG DEEP and come up with the best ideas.
That led to the industrial revolution and all kinds of inventions.
Today, we are still constrained.
By the things that constrain us are mostly intellectual ideas.
Emotional ideas.
Not food, or safety, or worried about getting eaten by tigers or getting vaporized by famine or something.
Conscious Limitations
Even our IMAGINATION is limited.
Imagine that you look out into the world and see whatever you see.
And consider that we can only imagine, or day dream, or fantasize only a LITTLE bit beyond what we see.
This can be about anything.
Inventions, conversational topics, jokes, persuasion tactics, etc.
And if you continue to PUSH the limits of this “daydreaming” mind, you’ll eventually think of something pretty cool.
Unlimited Brain Section
But there is another part of your mind that imagine FAR beyond what your rational thinking or daydreaming mind can imagine.
This, of course, is your dreaming mind.
That part that is giving you fantastic ideas every night.
Ideas on how to do much, much better than you can ever imagine constrained by reality.
