Past The Buying Point
There’s a pretty funny meme floating around.
I’ve seen it in mostly in economic situations.
It’s the guy from “Futurama.”
I’ve never watched the show so I don’t know the context of the statement.
But the meme has the guy saying:
“Shut up and take my money!”
This is a common issue in sales.
To actually talk yourself OUT of a sale.
You talk to the customer, find out a little bit about what they want, and they start to talk about your product.
You are so worried about giving a fantastic sales presentation you forget to check their “buying temperature.”
So in the middle of the presentation, they might be ready to buy.
But you keep talking, and they change their mind.
There’s also a famous and often copied and repeated movie line.
One that sort of means the same thing.
You Complete Me
From Jerry Maguire.
Dude realizes he’s made an error with his lady.
So he wants to go and try to salvage the relationship.
So he shows up and gives the famous “you complete me” speech.
But then she says:
“You had me at hello.”
Not quite the same as talking yourself out of a sale.
And if you are trying to woo back a lady you thought was lost, it will definitely help to use MORE seductive language.
Particularly in a scene like that famous movie scene.
Speaking eloquently and romantically, trying your best to win her back in front of her friends.
But the deeper issue between both these cases is one of calibration.
A much more “shut up and take my money” scenario is when talking to a new lady.
You show up, you have a friendly conversation.
She’s ready (and hoping) you ask for her number.
Or ask her to go somewhere else with you.
Failure To Close
But you never do.
You like talking to her, but you’re not quite confident enough to close her.
So you don’t really notice WHEN you talk yourself out of a sale.
Sure, there are a few cheesy movies scenes where the lady says:
“Shut up and kiss me!”
But in real life, this is very, very rare.
Being able to read people in real time like this is a very rare, and very powerful skill to have.
To understand what people are REALLY saying between the words.
X-Ray Vision
To walk into a room and “take the temperature” pretty quickly.
To know who’s into whom.
Who’s angry at whom.
Who has a high probability of wanting you to approach and start a conversation.
Once you get beyond the words, there is an INFINITE amount of energy always flowing back and forth.
Understand this kind of information and seduce or persuade like a boss.
