Your Best Self
What makes up who you are?
On a day to day level, nobody really knows.
We have a kind of short term memory of how we WERE.
And a kind of short term expectation of how we will BE.
And so long as you’ve got a lot of stability, you can “be” pretty happy.
But there is actually a lot of DATA that describes what goes into making us the way we are.
How this happens is anybody’s guess.
But as far as the inputs, as far as they can measure them, the answers are pretty simple.
This comes from decades of studies.
Identical twins raised together and apart.
Fraternal twins raised together and apart.
Adopted kids living with their adopted families.
Two Halves To You
And despite how utterly complex we humans are, and how complex our lives are, they are TWO categories of variables that make up who we are.
One is our DNA.
This we can’t really change.
The other half is our non-family peer group.
One way to think of this is that our DNA is kind of like our factory settings.
Or a more or less blank PC that you buy.
You can use it for anything, based on the software you add.
Games, video processing, bitcoin mining, whatever.
So there is fifty percent of your personality that you CAN change.
How does this work?
A clue comes when you were a kid, and your mom didn’t want you to pick up “bad habits” from those bad kids at school.
Soak Up Behaviors
These are the non-family peer people.
How does this happen?
We hang out with people, good or bad.
And we admire them, in general.
This means we’ll start to unconsciously “soak up” their behaviors, mannerisms, etc.
This is why hanging out with the “wrong crowd” can lead to disaster.
On the other hand, this is why they say if you want to be successful, hang out with successful people.
You’ll naturally soak up some of their successful behaviors.
Not only their behaviors, but their mindsets and beliefs.
If you hang out with a bunch of successful financial types, you’ll start to UNCONSCIOUSLY soak up their successful financial behaviors.
Saving money rather than spending it on junk.
Going to bed early, waking up early, etc.
If you hang out with charismatic, outgoing natural seducer types, you’ll start to “soak up” those behaviors.
You’ll start talking to people more playfully, more in the moment.
Much less outcome independent.
This is how ALL people learned before they invented school.
We would copy from people.
Consciously and unconsciously.
And this is something that is ALWAYS on.
Custom Built Role Models
But what if you don’t have a handy group of successful people to hang around?
You can invent them.
Take this natural behavior, bring it up to the conscious level.
Re-calibrate it for modern times.
This way, you can learn from ANYBODY.
