Bad Metaphors
A nearly always incorrectly used metaphor in economics is something called, “pent up demand.”
The way it’s used, is that longer somebody goes without buying things, the more things they’ll buy once they have the chance.
But a more accurate way to describe this is delayed demand, rather than pent up demand.
Everybody’s Gonna Die
Most pandemics in the movies follow a pretty consistent structure.
A super bug accidentally escapes from a lab, or is created on purpose, and then everything collapses relatively quickly.
There is a new type of hypnosis that has recently been discovered.
Dangerous Hypnosis
It’s based on an equally new idea that there are several layers of your subconscious mind.
And different levels of your subconscious mind require different types of hypnosis.
This means that up until now, hypnotists have potentially been accidentally targeting various levels of your subconscious mind.
But it turns out that some kinds of hypnosis that exist on certain levels of your subconscious may be self replicating in other host minds.
Brain To Brain Transmission
There was an old Twilight Zone episode about a guy who was lost.
He was given a place to stay by a bunch of monks in this monastery in the middle of nowhere.
After a while, he found a guy in a cage down in the basement.
Please Let Me Go
The guy said he was a victim, and the monks were evil.
At first, the guy didn’t believe him.
But pretty soon, the guy in the cage convinced him to let him go.
But as soon as he let the guy out of the cage, the guy in the cage turned out to be the devil.
And he had convinced the guy that he’d been a poor victim.
Don’t Trust The Father Of Seduction
By using his sweetly seductive words and leveraging the deep instinct of the wanderer to help others out.
So the wander had to spend the rest of his life trying to find the devil so he could put him back in his cage.
Once you have different kinds of hypnosis on different levels of your subconscious, they self replicate through your language.
Linguistic Mutations
And this can even spread linguistically and mutate over time.
Usually, the main focus on the movie is not the pandemic itself.
The pandemic is really just a set up for the Dystopian future that comes next.
After The Collapse
And how the characters try to survive in this post apocalyptic society.
If you want to buy a car, but you aren’t allowed to, when you are allowed to, you aren’t going to buy two cars.
If you normally eat 2000 calories per day, and you don’t eat for three days, you aren’t going to eat 6000 calories when you get a chance.
Hidden Meanings Behind Incorrect Metaphors
The metaphor of pent up demand is improperly calibrated.
Either by accident, or on purpose.
