Relaxing Night
Once a friend of mine and I were hanging out at his house.
This was back in high school.
His parents were gone, and we’d gotten some beers.
So we decided to relax, watch a few videos and chill.
But then we decided to go exploring.
In his neighborhood there was some construction going on.
The skeletons of some houses had gone up.
We didn’t intend to do any damage, only have a look around.
And it was kind of cool.
Dumb high school kids having fun.
Going up wooden stairs in half finished houses.
Scary Shape
But then we saw a shape off in the distance.
Black and slightly moving.
From a purely logical standpoint, it was probably some tarp tied down over some supplies or lumber or something.
But in our minds, we started to wonder if it wasn’t some kind of vicious guard dog.
And it was purposely being silent just to lure us in so it could eat us.
We both wanted to prove our fears wrong.
But we both chickened out.
We allowed our imaginary fears to send us back home.
Instead of proving our fears wrong.
This is a silly event, but I’ve always regretted it.
Being scared away by something real like a tiger is one thing.
But being scared away by your own imagination is kind of embarrassing.
Mostly Imaginary
Mark Twain once said that most of his fears never came true.
One metaphor based on the word fear is False Enemies Appearing Real.
We want to do something, but our fears, which are likely false, keep us stuck.
Kind of silly when you think about it.
Plenty of smart folks (including Isaac Newton) have been studying the occult since the dawn of time.
All kinds of magic.
Secrets to use magic to turn sand into gold.
But we play magic tricks on ourselves all the time.
We conjure up demons that keep us terrified.
Keep us standing in the corner.
Afraid to go after our dreams.
You Shall Not Pass
Afraid to stand up for ourselves.
Afraid of doing things we KNOW will make us money.
Here’s the thing.
Those demons are all fake.
Not real.
Conjured up by our very clever imaginations.
That is good news.
Why?
Because that makes them very, very easy to kill.
