Ancient Alpha
Imagine being an ancient caveman.
Imagine you’re pretty confident in your hunting abilities.
You’ve helped out in a few large kills.
You’re not quite confident enough to lead the team yet.
Imagine the ideal leader under this scenario.
Kind of like an ancient QB that would lead the team to victory.
Of course, in the old days, that QB would lead the team to a large kill that would feed everybody for a couple weeks.
First, imagine the best case scenario.
The leader sees evidence of a large animal.
He gets a killer smile on his face.
He looks around, super confident, and explains what to do.
He can read the faces for any uncertainty or worry.
Team Management
He slows down, explains everything in detail, so everybody feels good about the plan.
He’s kind of like Magic Johnson during the kill.
He knows exactly where everybody is and what they are doing.
He calls out everybody’s name and gives them clear directions during the kill.
He carefully moves everybody into position with his ancient field leadership.
Finally he gives the command, everybody moves in, does thier part and everybody gets the thrill of victory.
That’s the best case scenario.
Tribal Chaos
Now the worst case scenario.
Some guys the leader but kind of by default.
He’s not really that confident during game time.
He isn’t sure, he isn’t that capable of changing things up as the situation unfolds.
He’s very prone to give the retreat when things fall apart.
This leader falls apart under pressure.
So, you never really get any big kills.
Everybody is secretly wishing he would be a better leader.
I used to be in charge of interviewing people a long time ago.
During interviews, everybody says they can do the job.
Everybody can talk a good game.
Did I Say That?
But when it comes down to it, few people can follow through.
In modern life, it’s very HARD to tell if somebody can back up their words with actions.
A very, very attractive trait is to NOT get knocked off balance when things don’t go right.
Getting knocked off balance and NOT getting knocked off balance is the difference between weak leaders and strong leaders.
There are two ways to figure this out about somebody.
Whether they have this quality or not.
A quality EVERYBODY wishes everybody else had.
Job interviewers could hire people and hope for the best.
Ladies could date guys and hope for the best.
But that’s risky and it takes a lot of time.
Play Fight
So we humans have developed shortcuts.
To see how easily we can knock each other off balance.
The more difficult it is to knock people off balance, the MORE we value them.
That’s why job interviewers ask goofy and unexpected questions.
That’s why ladies say things out of nowhere that sort of sound like an insult.
But they are attempts, HOPES, that you’ll VERIFY your value.
The more of these frame tests you pass, the more they’ll want you.
