Diamond Seller
I have a friend in sales. He makes a ton of money. He is a pure natural.
He’s worked in this jewelry store for a while. He sells mostly engagement rings.
When he’s not selling engagement rings, he’s selling other diamonds. Probably 90% of the stuff he sells are diamonds.
A disturbing trend in modern wedding is more and more people are borrowing money to pay for their wedding.
Not A Good Idea
This is dangerous for a whole lot of reasons.
In general, debt is best used for any kind of appreciating asset. Like a business or a house.
Or at the very least, something that you need to make money, like a car to go to work.
Even student debt is theoretically a good idea, so long as you can use the debt to get a degree to get a job that will pay back the debt.
Guaranteed To Lose Value
But borrowing money for a wedding ceremony doesn’t make much sense.
I have a friend who got married a long time ago. He was poor, his wife was poor, and both their parents were poor.
They were Vietnamese, and it’s their tradition for people to bring cash as wedding gifts.
The purpose is the same as bringing things from a bridal registry like toasters and waffle makers. To help the young couple start out.
Maximum Interest Rates
But my friend and his wife had no choice other than put the entire wedding on their credit cards, hoping the cash they would get would be enough to pay it off.
Once upon a time a white wedding gown was a symbol of wealth. Something that only rich people did. The reason it was white had nothing to do with purity. It was to show off how clean it was.
This was back in the day when you had to wash things by hand. So wearing a white dress on your wedding day was a signal that you were rich.
It was a signal that you were wearing a brand new dress on your wedding day.
The Poor Copy The Rich
But like all other trends that start out with rich people, other people copy them, but they don’t copy the reasons.
They only copy the behavior itself, making up new reasons.
Before, a white wedding dress meant it was brand new, and clean.
Now you can buy a used one, and so long as it’s white, it serves the purpose of signifying purity. A completely different reasons.
Kind of like in the old days in Japan. Shopkeepers would put water on the ground outside their stores.
Dirt Streets
But that was when the ground was dirt. The water was to keep dirt from being kicked up in the air.
Today, they still do that. They put water out in front of their shops. But the ground is cement. So they had to come up with a different reason to do the same thing.
Now they say they do it because it lowers the temperature, making the shops more inviting.
Humans need to have a need to copy things other people do.
We Need To Copy
Even if we need to make up a different reason for doing those same things.
It’s as if we don’t know how to think for yourself.
That if you don’t copy other people, bad things might happen.
That it’s too scary to think for yourself.
It’s too scary to act independently.
It’s too uncomfortable to leave the crowd behind.
Sweating Bullets
During the entire wedding, my friend and his wife were sweating bullets. If they didn’t collect enough cash from their gifts to pay off their credit cards, they would start their marriage off with a crap ton of debt.
I guess people today are so desperate to have a big expensive wedding, since that’s what you are supposed to do, that’s what everybody does, they are willingly going into debt.
The U.S. economy, which pretty much means the global economy, is based on continued expansion of credit.
Debt Needs To Grow
Ever since world war II, if the debt hasn’t expanded by more than 2%, we’ve had a recession.
So we need some reason to increase debt.
This requires money lenders, and money borrows.
It seems there is never any shortage of both.
My friend just talks to people and makes them feel good.
Natural Conversations
He doesn’t know how, he’s just a natural.
He talks to girls outside of the diamond shop, and they naturally want to have sex with him.
He talks to girls inside of his diamond shop, and they naturally want to buy diamonds from him.
