Pot Lucks are Fun
I went to this work party a couple of weeks ago.
It was a potlock and a lot of people brought some pretty delicious things.
One lady brought this utterly fantastic bean dip, so I asked her for the recipe.
Cake Baking Skills
I have a friend who is a cake baking expert.
She started learning how to bake cakes when she was nominated by her friends to bake a cake for a local party.
Since then she’s been learning all different kinds of advanced cake baking techniques.
Deeper and Colder
A thermocline is when the water temperatures changes dramatically from the surface temperature to the deeper temperatures.
The deeper down you go, the more the temperatures changes.
Sometimes you can feel this when you go swimming.
On the surface it’s warm and comfortable, but the deeper down you go the colder and darker this gets.
What Makes A Classic?
I watched a lecture recently by a literature professor.
The topic of this lecture is what makes a classic a classic.
His theory is that a classic has to have several components.
One is there has to be different themes within the same story.
Meta Themes
That the deeper you go, the more profound the themes.
This allows different people to pay attention to this and get different meanings.
It also requires you be able to pay attention to this at different times, and each time through these stories, you get something different from them.
Three Generations
But most importantly, any classic must last through at least three generations.
Each generation has to find the same layered structure within these stories, but for different reasons.
And since we’ll never be able to predict what future generations might think about anything, predicting which stories will be classics is impossible.
Only through the lens of time can we decide whether or not these stories are profound.
Find Meaning Within
Whether these stories are important.
Whether these stories have meaning, far beyond the surface.
That between these ideas are much deeper, much more profound realizations that will always be waiting for you to discover this.
Lake Murder
They say at the bottom of Lake Tahoe is a bunch of bodies.
Because it’s so deep, it’s a perfect place to dispose of murdered people, since the cops won’t ever look that deeply into anything.
Because it’s so cold, the bodies are perfectly preserved.
So if you did manage to go down deep enough, you’d find an underwater city of the dead, perfectly preserved.
Cult Cake
She made this wedding cake for a cult.
Not really a cult, but a really weird religion.
They wanted a seventeen layer cake.
Each layer represented a level of their after life.
Prime Numbers
Seventeen because it’s a the lowest double digit prime number that contains a seven.
Each layer was made from important spices.
This looked magnificent.
Surprisingly Delicious
I made the bean dip and it was really good.
It had seven layers, and a couple of the layers were what you would expect.
Beans, cheese, sour cream, guacamole.
Mysterious Three
But the other three were things you would never think of.
Three things that when combined with the other four, made this absolutely fascinating.
