Digital Audio Workstations
If you are at all familiar with music production, then you know what a DAW is.
A digital audio workstation.
A way to create pretty much any kind of music you want.
There are two kinds of virtual instruments that go inside of a DAW.
Sampled instruments, which are based on actual recordings from actual instruments.
Soft Synth
And software synthesizers, or soft synths.
These can be made to create pretty much any sound you can imagine.
Most movies use these to make all the musical effects.
Inside of our ear we have something called a cochlea.
Hairs In Your Ears
This is a long tube that is curled up.
Inside of the cochlea are a whole bunch of tiny little hairs, each as slightly different length.
This is how we perceive sounds.
The little hairs vibrate, and then the signal to our brain, which actually creates the illusion of sound.
No Ears – No Sounds
The philosophical question of whether or not a sound is made if a tree falls into empty forest actually has a scientific answer.
One of the weirdest principles from physics is the Heisenberg principle of uncertainty.
It says that the uncertainty of a particles momentum, delta p, multiplied by the uncertainty if it’s position, delta X, is always greater than a constant.
Planck
Planck’s constant.
This means that the more can be said about the position, the less you can say about the momentum.
Unfortunately, this is almost always misunderstood to be a function of a human observer.
But in reality this is a function of the particle probability waveform itself.
Heisenberg’s principle of uncertainty was true a millions year ago, and it will true a million years from now, after humans have gone extinct.
No Humans Required
Our mind body systems are energy pumps.
We consume energy, and we must burn energy.
Before life was created, either by aliens, God or spontaneous chance, there was only non-life.
But life moves and changes.
Life consumes energy and replicates.
Many life forms are predators of some kind.
Sensing Systems
Meaning they consume other life forms.
We evolved a brain with five sensory organs.
Energy goes through our senses through biological transducers.
A transducer is any device that can change any kind of energy signal into an electrical form.
The external signals are what we call sounds, light, feelings, smells, etc.
Inside Imaginations
But all those are only as they are imagined inside of our brain.
Smells are various chemicals floating around in the air.
Sound and tactile sensations are pressure.
Light is vibrations in the electromagnetic spectrum.
We evolved to perceive things to help us in our prime directive.
Eat and Not Get Eaten
To find sources of energy we could consume.
To avoid being sources of energy other entities might want to consume.
Different animals with different food sources and different predators would perceive the world much differently than we do.
One weird example is the idea of dark matter, and dark energy.
Physicists tell us that we can only perceive with our senses, ten percent of the matter and energy that is around us.
All Around You
Which means there could be plenty of other living entities around us, that we can’t see, and we can’t see them.
Unless they are predators, or potential energy, we will not have evolved the sensory capabilities to discern them.
Of course, it is very possible that some entities exist that can see us, but we can’t see them.
But we’ll never know they are there.
How Long Are They Watching?
Unless they want us to be there.
They may come tonight in your dreams.
This may be their only way of communication to humans.
Kind of like we have always been on the look out for intelligent life.
Perhaps they are trying desperately to communicate with us in the best way they know how.
Missing Each Other
Just like we are communicating with them in the best way we know how.
The interesting about Heisenberg’s principle of uncertainty is the relationship between the momentum probability wave and the position probability wave.
Mathematically, one is the Fourier transform of the other.
That’s why the more specific one gets, the less specific the other gets.
This also holds up with energy and time.
Reverse Fourier Transform
Both are represented by probability waves that are the Fourier transform of one another.
Each of the hairs inside our cochlea are of a slightly different length.
Each one resonates at a different frequency.
As the various pressure waves hit our ears, it vibrates different hairs.
Each hair essentially extracts out the particular wave form of that particular frequency.
Separate Out The Frequencies
This is essentially what a Fourier transform does.
Take a bunch of waves all mixed in, and separates out the underlying component frequencies.
So all day long, your ears are endless performing Fourier transforms of all the air pressure waves hitting your ears.
If you are skilled enough with a software synthesizer, you can take something very simple, and very boring, like a pure sine wave.
Chop It To Bits
And mangle the crap out of it.
Put in filters, and echoes, and low frequency oscillators, or LFO’s and make it sound like pretty much anything.
There is a very popular synthesizer called the Zebra.
And there is a custom made add on you can buy, called the Dark Zebra.
Dark Zebra
The Dark Zebra was specifically engineered to create nearly all the sounds in the movie, the Dark Night.
Pressure waves going in through your ears.
Having a biologically evolved, mathematically precise, Fourier transform applied to them.
Generating electrical impulses in your brain.
Which will create thoughts and feelings and emotions that match up perfectly with one of the greatest mythological stories of modern times.
