Appreciation
There are plenty of things in life that are truly magnificent.
For example, if you’ve ever seen a large whale leap out of the water, that is pretty spellbinding.
Personally, I’ve never seen such a thing.
But people who have describe it like a religious experience.
I’ve heard some whales, and that was fairly cool.
My buddies and I were on a fishing trip in the Sea of Cortez.
We’d leave early, and find a spot and get our gear ready.
In the early morning quite, you could hear the whales surfacing, exhaling and taking a breath.
I’ve done a lot of hiking and have seen some pretty cool sights.
People report this same sense of wonder when they step to the edge of the grand canyon for the first time.
People who like the arts get this sense of wonder when they see a particularly moving play or opera.
Everybody Digs It
All us humans LOVE this kind of experience.
To be moved, awed, transfixed by something much more emotionally powerful than the day-to-day mundane.
However, this is easy.
Meaning it’s not special to BE MOVED by something special.
EVERYBODY can step to the edge of the grand canyon and be moved.
EVERYBODY can be moved when they see a huge whale leap out of the ocean.
If you want to BE the one that moves others?
This takes some work.
Most people just show up and hope for the best.
Ladies that are super gorgeous know nothing OTHER than showing up and being seen as a rare and gorgeous creature who creates jaw dropping lust.
Just by showing up!
Targeted Halo Effect
But YOU, (yes, you!) can create that same feeling.
It does take work.
It’s not a once and one trick.
It takes some specific kind of mindfulness practice.
To look into your mind, and experience in it a deep way.
To build up an appreciation for your self awareness.
The absolute WONDER that is in your brain.
See, a single neuron is like a biological robot.
Emergent Complexity
One neuron can’t think, can’t remember, can’t plan weekends.
But hook up a 100 billion together, and what do you get?
A self aware brain.
A self aware brain that can think and fantasize and dream and remember.
But this is just the surface of the miracle of your brain.
The first law of thermodynamics says that energy nor matter cannot be created or destroyed.
Which means that everything that exists RIGHT now, is LITERALLY as old as time.
Ancient Brain
Before the big bang, there was nothing.
No energy.
No matter.
No time.
And then BOOM!
And here we are, 13 billion years later.
So not only is your brain the MOST complex emergent system in the universe, the energy and matter that makes up your brain is 13 billion years old!
If you can practice building up a deep sense of awe for your own brain, what’s next?
Build up a deep sense of awe for all living things.
Including ANYBODY you happen to be having a conversation with.
And what happens when THEY feel YOU appreciating THEM like most people appreciate things like the Grand Canyon?
