Math and Music
One of the coolest overlapping areas of science is humans and music.
On the one hand, humans are very subjective, logic or mathematics isn’t our strong suit.
In fact, if most of us had to take a course in pure logic or any advanced math like calculus or differential equations, it would take a lot of brainpower to not get less than a C.
Sounds Good
We listen to music that sounds subjectively pleasing.
But there are very clear overlaps between what is subjectively pleasing, and what is mathematically pure.
I heard a story from friend about her cousin.
Her husband died, unexpectedly, in the middle of the night.
They still don’t know why.
New One In
At the same time, another cousin had a baby, they weren’t very close.
But plenty of people remarked about all the similarities between the baby and the dead husband.
Whether this was a subconscious, confirmation bias driven attempt to make her feel better or some kind of spiritual event is hard to tell.
The idea of resonance is pretty cool.
While this is a very mathematically precise idea, most kids know all about resonance.
Swing Set Theory
If you are on the swing on the playground, we all learn how to match the resonance frequency of the swing with our legs.
Or if you are in a bathtub, it’s very easy to match the resonance frequency, create some large bathtub waves, and get plenty of water out of the tub and onto the floor.
I was at this hypnosis seminar a few weeks ago, and this old couple told this really cool story.
Old Married Couple
They’d been married for over forty years, and they said that ever since they’d met, they’d felt a kind of connection.
A kind of deep connection that you feel with somebody that you’ve known for a long, long time.
But they were able to feel this connection, not after a while but after they first met.
At first, they just assumed that this feeling met it was true love.
But they never really quite believed that.
They thought there was something more here.
They knew there was something more going on with this.
They both felt, on some level, that something about this was very profound.
We Need To Research This
So they decided to do some research.
They were astute enough to realize that they may be unwittingly setting themselves up to be scammed.
Not really scammed, but just be told what they wanted to hear, which is how a lot of therapists and hypnotists operate.
This is more a function of their patients, who’d rather pay to be told what they want to here, rather than the truth.
So they decided to spend a year doing independent research.
They would each spend their own free time, researching whatever area they felt would help.
Let’s Compare Notes In A Year
They would otherwise live normal lives as husband and wife.
But they would keep their own research project secret for a year.
After a year, they would compare notes.
And after a year, they were absolutely flabbergasted.
They each ended up seeing various past life regression specialists, but in different cities.
And they made sure they maintained patient client confidentiality, just to ensure the data was correct.
The Ancient Familiar
But in their independent research, they both found the same results.
That they had been married way back in one of the first civilizations in ancient Mesopotamia.
They were very young, and very much in love, but they got caught in a flood.
Their home was in a valley, and they knew their was a huge flood coming that they would not escape, that would kill them.
Not Lost In The Flood
So as they waited together for the flood that would kill them, they promised each other they would find each other in the next life.
And they held that thought in mind, as they held each other, as they died.
And they’ve found each other, over and over and over again.
And each time, they’ve remembered that story, over and over and over again.
In Canada, they have the Bay of Fundy.
Super High Super Low
The tides, which also have their own resonance frequency, match perfectly with the shape of the Bay.
Just like a kid on a swing or in a bathtub.
The difference between high tide and low tide is about fifty feet, the highest in the world.
Lucky Timing
Sometimes you’ll walk into a busy restaurant, and you think you don’t to wait, but right then, somebody gets up and you luck out and get their table.
Most of the time, when we die, we need to get back in line and wait our turn to be reborn again.
But sometimes, we get lucky, and as soon as we die, a new body is ready and we jump to the front of the line.
That’s what she thinks happened to her husband.
Cut Back In Line
He left the moment the new baby was born, and he jumped right back in.
If you know anything about music, you know there is something very pleasing about a perfect fifth.
A basic chord is made up of the root note, a third, and a fifth.
Not Just Triangles
Way back in ancient Greece, the Pythagoreans were studying the relationship between math and music.
And the Pythagoreans, who were actually a cult who worshipped mathematics, had something called a Pythagorean ratio, that also described, mathematically, why thirds and fifths sound so pleasing to the human ear.
Some believe we are physical beings having a spiritual experience.
But perhaps we are mathematical beings having a subjective experience.
