Deep Down
Most humans think we are attracted to content, or what exists on the surface.
But we are moved by structure.
For example, imagine two actors.
One is A list.
One is bottom of the barrel Z list.
They both say the EXACT same words.
But one guy says them so horrible it sounds like a talking tree.
Or very, very wooden.
But the other actor, they say the lines with conviction.
Belief.
Pure congruence.
We are MOVED not by the words themselves, but how they are presented.
Based on the structure.
Another example.
Musical Depth
Consider your favorite piece of music.
But only think if it as a simple melody.
No other instruments.
No chord progression.
Only that melody, played by a very simple sounding instrument.
Through very low quality speakers.
Like the kind they have in elevators.
Same melody.
Same sequence of notes.
But a completely different feeling.
Now switch to imagining that with everything included.
The drums, the beat, other instruments, and critically, the chord progression.
Doubt Uncertainty
Another movie example.
One reason Hollywood movies aren’t nearly as good as they used to be is there is very little character arc.
The main characters of recent Hollywood blockbusters are simple.
Like cartoon characters.
They face very few obstacles, or struggles, or doubts about themselves.
The underlying “chord progression” of a good movie is the Hero’s Journey.
Even if it’s a romantic comedy.
Certain sequences of themes.
Where the character is initially living a safe but boring life.
Then they are forced on a “journey.”
They are forced to look deep inside themselves and defeat their inner demons.
They are forced to confront their outer demons to achieve their goal, kill the monster, get the girl, and live happily ever after.
Critically, before they do all that, they aren’t sure if they CAN do all that.
Purpose
But they MUST try anyhow.
This STRUCTURE thing that makes it so compelling.
Not all the stuff on top.
How you communicate to others is the same.
The structure is your frame.
The surface is the things you say.
If you have a strong enough frame, the words matter very little.
But if you have a relatively weak frame, no words will work.
How do you BUILD a strong frame?
First, realize a strong frame is not something you “get” by reading a few books.
Get Going
It’s a long process.
To get and to maintain.
EVERYTHING valuable in life is like this.
Healthy body, healthy relationship, healthy career, strong frame.
They take a lot of work to get.
They take a lot of work to keep.
But with a strong enough frame, people will follow you to the ends of the Earth.
