Watch Closely
Researchers did an interesting memory study.
They had a guy pretending to be a thief come into a large classroom while a professor was lecturing and steal a bag off the desk in front.
A common understanding is that winners of wars write the history books.
We might assume that half the time the good guys win, and half the time the bad guys win.
Bad Guys Write History
This would mean that half of human history is written by the bad guys.
Who probably wrote history to make themselves look like the good guys.
A few therapists have been sued by inadvertently implanting false memories into their patients.
Somebody would come with some issues.
Accidental Memory Implant
After a few weeks or months of talking about their problems they would remember being sexually abused.
But there never was any sexual abuse.
Similarly, a lot of people are in jail because they were coerced into making false confessions.
These confessions were made under duress.
Why’d You Buy THAT Car?!
Structurally, it’s not much different than somebody deciding to buy something under pressure from a very strong framed sales person.
It’s common to think we know something, only to find evidence of the contrary.
The Asch conformity test shows what we know is heavily influenced by our social peers, or social proof.
Lab Coat Guy Said It’s OK
The Milgram experiment showed that what we know is heavily influenced by authority figures.
Studies have been done on jury trials.
Particularly how the juries deliberated.
When they say out loud whether they think the guy is guilty or not, and then deliberated, those deliberations take twice as long.
When they keep their opinions to themselves before deliberating, those take half as long.
Spoken Beliefs Hard To Change
Just saying what you believe out loud will have a huge impact on the strength of that belief.
Most of us have plenty of beliefs that are never questioned.
If they are backed by social proof, authority and commitment and consistency, they may never be questioned.
Which means you have tons of beliefs in your head that aren’t true.
Head Filled With Nonsense
So why not choose which beliefs you believe if they don’t need to be true?
Why not believe that you are very seductive.
Why not believe that you are very intelligent.
Why not believe that you are very capable.
Why not believe that it’s very easy for you to make money.
One Wrong Word
Funny thing is all it takes is a memory from a criminal, and that’s enough to put him in jail for the rest of his life.
But if all you have is a memory from a witness, that’s not even enough to go to trial.
I guess all memories are not created equal.
Since half of human history was written by bad guys pretending to be good guys, how do we know what really happened?
Good Guys Rewrite Too
It’s probably equally true that the good guys rewrote history to make themselves look even better.
Which means all of history is made up.
Later, after the pretend thief stole the bag, they asked all the students what he looked like.
They all gave different answers.
Um, Who?
Which is kind of strange, considering the situation.
They were in a college classroom for the sole purpose of looking at the front of the classroom to remember what happened.
And they did remember what happened.
It’s just that they all remembered different things.
