College Party
When I was in college my friends and I like to go car camping quite a bit, mainly to sit around the campfire and play games and tell stories.
One game in particular was really enjoyable, but it required that only about half of the people knew the rules.
You’d have to tell a story that satisfied two criteria.
One was it had to be a whodunnit story, and second the characters in the story had to have the same names as the people sitting around the fire.
Round Robin Hustling
I used to live in this apartment complex that had a big game room.
Sometimes on the weekend we’d play a kind of skins game, where each person would put in a dollar or two, and we’d take turns seeing who could break a rack of three balls and hit them all with the least amount of shots.
I have this really strange friend, she’s some kind of engineer, and she and her friends have these really messed up pot lucks.
It’s a kind of competition, a kind of last man standing type of thing.
Everybody brings something to eat, and they each put $100 in a pot.
Looks Are Purposely Deceiving
But the stuff they bring only needs to look good.
The only party I went to, I’ll never go again, one guy brought a cake, but instead of sugar in the cake they used salt.
And they made the frosting out of shortening, food coloring, and mustard powder.
Wizard Loving Neighbor
One of my neighbors is into magic and lots of occult stuff.
He also is a member of this book club, and they have parties and stuff.
Once he invited me to his book club party, and I had an experience there that I’m not sure I even understand yet.
It’s like when you try to focus on this, or to try and remember this, you’re mind keeps swirling in circles of deepening confusion.
Never Ending Story Game
We played this game called never ending story.
But we also smoked something very interesting.
We all sat in a circle, the guy who hosted the party had huge basement that he’d converted into a game room.
And Then…
It was just like the regular never ending story, where one each person adds another line.
The story was going around one direction, and the pipe was going around in another direction.
Since these guys are all story and magic fans, right off the bat the story started off about a wizard next to an enchanted forest.
Me Then Not Me
The last thing I remember, as a participant in the story telling, was this wizard was looking for some cave to talk to some spirit.
But then I had an out of body experience.
I was floating above the room, and watching everything happen.
I was watching this story unfold like somebody else was telling it.
That Dude Is Interesting
I was even watching myself tell my part of the story but I felt like I was watching a really interesting TV show, when I didn’t know what was going to happen next.
I thought it was an aspect of whatever we were smoking.
I mentioned this to my friend a couple days ago, and he said it wasn’t.
He said this happens to everybody, every time they do this.
Consciousness Distortion
They always pop out of their consciousness, and watch themselves tell this story, just like I had.
I asked him who was doing the storytelling if everybody was watching.
He said I don’t know.
But there is a part of you, that when you get into rapport with that part of you, will open you up to a world you can’t imagine.
Delicate Balance
You can only access this world if you can effectively navigate through the world of metaphors and symbolism.
And you are able to simply relax and let go, and trust this other entity with your mind and your consciousness.
Sometimes people bring hallucinogens.
Baked Into The Cake
They bake them into the cakes or casseroles.
The rule is every takes a turn taking a bite.
To continue to play, you can’t pass out, you can’t vomit and you can’t end up in the emergency room.
Whoever lasts the longest, gets all the money.
I couldn’t even swallow my salt mustard cake, so I was immediately disqualified.
Skins Pots Are Large
Sometimes the pots get pretty big.
Once I played with five other guys, and we put in $5 each round, so it was $25 per round.
But to win the pot, you have to win outright.
So it keeps rolling over, just like a skins game.
Game Within A Game
The best part is when a game within a game develops.
When at least one of the newcomers figures out the game.
That whoever speaks first after the story is finished, that’s the person who did the crime.
Then the new game that organically evolves inside the other game is to make these stories as ridiculous as possible, while keeping the newcomers as confused as possible.
Nothing Makes Sense
This usually involves somebody that was only tangentially involved in the begging of the story being the one who did everything.
Like some guy was across the street building his canoe.
But he is also the one that sabotaged the peanut butter factory.
So even if you buy a jar of peanut butter that says extra creamy, it’s really extra chunky.
Wait… That… What?
Which, of course, doesn’t make any sense.
But that’s the whole point of this game.
To make you as confused as possible, so you can’t remember any of this.
