One Way Love
Most people are familiar with the term “one-itis.”
Meaning you have strong feelings of attraction for somebody.
Which, by itself, is not bad or wrong or even undesired.
This label has a couple of problems with it.
One it is generally a one-way attraction.
Before the Internet, and all the “pick up” slang was invented, this was generally called “crush.”
You liked somebody, but they either didn’t like you back, or they didn’t know you existed.
Or another old school label for this was a secret admirer.
But then they invented the Internet, and a bunch of people could make it more interesting on the sidelines.
Too Much Science
To talk about attraction, seduction, dating, etc. in “scientific terms.”
One-itis sounds very “scientific.”
The “itis” part means “inflammation.”
For example, I have plenty of experience with “tendon-itis” which simply means inflamed tendon.
But in their attempts to scientifically describe, and perhaps distance themselves from any emotional involvement, the “sideline scientists” are kind of missing the point.
Very rarely does two people fall in love with each other at precisely the same time.
Perhaps one of the BEST feeling is that realizing your crush is also crushing on you.
Story With 1000 Lovers
In fact, this is the main theme of most “adolescent” romantic stories.
Two kids, or young adults like each other.
But there are plenty of issues with them getting together.
Their parents, their circumstances, their inability to express themselves clearly to each other.
But generally speaking, when they get together in the end it is a GOOD feeling.
A HAPPY ending.
Make no mistake, this is NOT the way life IS.
This is the IDEAL.
The BEST CASE scenario.
To find somebody that you like.
And to be driven by that “like” to get them to like you.
Too Scary
Only in modern times do we rationalize and try to distance ourselves from this FANTASTIC human experience by using scientific labels.
Maybe the Internet and social media helps us by keeping us on the sidelines.
In the past year or so, the kind of dating terms have EXPLODED.
This is tragic.
Why?
Because all this energy is used to DESCRIBE this natural process.
Energy used to describe it with all kinds of advanced sounding language.
To KEEP us from getting in the game.
Don’t Hate The System
Yes, the system is WRECKED.
Yes, the dating marking is a raging dumpster fire.
But guess what?
We humans are STILL the same.
Ever wonder why Korean Dramas have become so popular, around the world, in the past few years?
Because they are old school LOVE STORIES.
Humans that have feelings for each other clumsily stumbling toward one another.
Sappy, goofy, silly, but still LOVE stories.
What is love, after all?
Two clueless fools who have one-itis for EACH OTHER.
Get off the sidelines and get in the game.
