What’s That Noise?
A few days ago I was out driving around and I was continually getting bothered by this strange clunking sound in my engine. I drove past this auto repair shop and so I pulled and finally deciding to see what was wrong.
I was kind of worried because I don’t know much about engines. I had been taken advantage of in the past and so I was little bit worried because I didn’t really know what was wrong with my car.
I pulled in and the guy said it would take about an hour to take a look at it and then tell me how much he was gonna cost and how long was going to take to fix. I said okay and I left. I started wandering around the neighborhood.
Where Am I?
I was in it kind of an unfamiliar neighborhood so I wasn’t quite sure what was around. I found this old used bookstore. I walked inside this old used bookstore. They had a lot of old books and a lot of paperbacks that looked like they had been read several times. Fiction, mass-market fiction. They were between $.50 and a dollar.
They had a lot of other strange books. I found this one very interesting medical book that was published in 1950. The forward, by another medical doctor, it was written by a medical doctor, but of the forward by another medical doctor, and the forward was explained the difference between homeopathic medicine and more modern medicine.
I guess back in the 50s there was still a lot of doctors that were practicing homeopathic medicine or at least were open to homeopathic medicine. I guess this was before the pharmaceutical industrial complex kind of took over the medical industry. Back then there were still a few doctors that were interested in finding natural cures.
Wrote 75 Years Ago
This one doctor that wrote this book, his theory was that whenever humans have this illness, any kind of disease, it’s more of a matter of the body being out of calibration. Meaning we come into this world with these instincts that drive our behaviors and urges and we were created in a world where these instincts and urges and desires were matched carefully with our environment.
If we satisfy our instincts and needs and urges with things that are not or were not in our natural environment back when our initial instincts were created we will fall out of calibration.
His theory was that all illnesses are because our bodies are out of calibration with the way we are supposed to be living and behaving and this is a very very ancient idea that goes although it back to the ancient Greeks. One of the case studies he showed was the tragedy of what happens when this is misunderstood, this idea of being out of calibration is being misunderstood.
Dirt Tastes Good
The case study was about a guy who only liked to eat food that wasn’t satisfying his body’s needs for calories. It was food that was completely devoid of calories, but for some reason that was the only thing that he would eat it. It wasn’t even food it wasn’t like today’s junk food where you have a lot of food that actually has calories but they’re not very useful calories.
This was a guy that would eat things like dirt and tree bark and for some reason he had this psychological problem that he thought dirt and tree bark tasted delicious. From the standpoint of modern medicine this doesn’t make any sense.
This is just some crazy guy that likes the dirt and tree bark and the only solution is to put them in a mental hospital and force-feed him regular food but the author of this book explained that was maybe a mistake.
Modern Dis-Ease
It seems like this is very similar to a lot of modern illnesses. They seem to be rediscovering that they are caused by not eating correctly. For example, there’s this idea of leptin resistance or insulin resistance.
The way are bodies are supposed to work is we’re supposed to eat a certain kind of food and once we have enough of that certain kind of food our body will produce leptin and that leptin will signal to our brain that were full and will stop eating.
If we eat the wrong food, if we eat too many refined carbohydrates, too much bread, too much sugar, we will become leptin resistant which means we’ll be keep eating but our bodies won’t think that were full because we’re not eating the correct food and our leptin resistance our leptin interactivity will become out of calibration and that’s one of the main causes of obesity is.
Willpower Not The Issue
It’s not a matter of willpower. It’s just a matter of being out of calibration to what what your body is programmed to eat and consume. A lot of other diseases like cancer are believed to be caused by eating too much sugar.
There’s a lot of diseases that are believed to be caused by sugar which is another form of this out of calibration. We eat this food that our body is not really set up to consume and that knocks our body out of calibration. Most diseases could very well be a case of our body being out of calibration so all we really need to do is to recalibrate our bodies.
There’s a lot of controversy now around the ketogenic diet, which is theoretically a way to get our bodies back into calibration, which means you’ll be eating less food you be less hungry and you’ll be a more natural weight.
A Force Fed Diet of Dirt
When they put this guy into the mental hospital and forced fed him regular food the doctor said this was a tragedy. From his perspective that would be like one of us being forced into a mental hospital and being force fed dirt and bark instead of what we wanted to eat.
Without treating the root cause of this guy’s problem just by treating the symptoms by forcing him to eat food that he thought was disgusting, that would probably drive him even further psychologically insane.
It was amazing that this book was written back in the 50s, which was also a rediscovering of these ideas from the ancient Greeks. But it seems to be something that were also rediscovering today with the idea of leptin resistance and the ketogenic diet and the dangers of eating too much sugar.
Dude, How Much?
When I finally got back to the auto body shop or the auto shop to get my car I was a little bit nervous. I was wondering how much it was going to cost. I was thinking maybe I might have to spend a lot of money to buy a rental car maybe you tell me my car was too far gone or I need to buy have some very expensive parts.
I showed up and he seemed very happy. He said your car’s fixed. I said what was wrong what was wrong with it? He said, well I hooked it up to or machine to see what was wrong with it. I ran a bunch of diagnostics and it seemed I just need to adjust a few things. It seemed that your engine was out of calibration and once I readjusted everything was running just perfectly.
It took him only 20 minutes and it cost me less than 100 bucks because he didn’t need to use any tools or any equipment or any parts he just kind of had to readjust a few things. It was very cheap was very quick and now my car runs perfectly.
