Flow State
Being outcome independent is a very, very pleasant state of mind.
We all want more or less the same stuff.
More money, better relationships, better jobs, etc.
But getting those things is the difficult part.
You may even say this is our “purpose.”
To keep searching for more enjoyable, less stressful, more effective ways of going after those things we all want.
Psychologists have been studying the “flow state” for a while.
That very rare state of mind where you are nearly unconscious.
You are operating with almost perfect efficiency.
This is nearly always associated with sports.
But it can happen anywhere.
When you completely “lose yourself” and become one with whatever you are doing.
Everywhere
Writing, painting, playing an instrument, etc.
This is possible when having conversations with strangers.
When you start off like normal, but you really “hit it off.”
There are no lulls in the conversation.
No uncomfortable silences.
You each drop in movie quotes and each understand them and their applications to the conversation.
This is when the outcome takes care of itself.
It just kind of happens.
There is no anxiety when asking for the number or the sale.
It’s like an obvious next step.
For most people, this is very, very rare.
But it can be less rare.
Even predictable.
This is something you can practice.
But most people don’t even think about this until they are IN a conversation and WISH they had “outcome independence.”
When it’s too late.
Practice and Pre-Frame
But you can prepare for outcome independence.
For example, let’s say you went on three job interviews per week, just for fun.
Not because you wanted a job.
Just to practice.
And you got pretty good.
Relaxed, presenting your best self.
Handling all the goofy job interview questions.
And for the health of your career, you always were in the process of sending out resumes.
So when a nice job DID come up, it would feel normal.
Natural and part of every day life.
In this kind of interview, it would be very easy, even automatic, to be outcome independent.
Because you’d have a whole string of positive memories.
Mirrored Present
And a strong feeling of positive expectations of creating more memories in the future.
So this ONE interview, even if was for a good job, wouldn’t matter much.
Compared to your successful past and your successful future.
This is the key to living an outcome independent life.
Start slowly, create momentum, and keep the party going.
