Critical Skill Creation
There is a lot of mixed feeling associated with any kind of “self help.”
And nearly all of these are entirely justified.
Most of the things people want involve other people.
Making more money, creating better relationships.
And since these are also the things that TERRIFY us the most, we tend to be suckers for any kind of self help promise.
Suckers for any kind of self help are suckers in the PT Barnum sense.
That a sucker is born every minute.
And suckers are suckers BECAUSE we believe something that is TOO GOOD to be true.
Count Me In!
Lose weight while I sleep?
Sign me up!
The magical word patterns that will make ANY GIRL fall in love?
Sign me up!
The dead simple copy and paste system that will make a me a MILLIONAIRE?
Oh yeah, baby!
Even most self help “books” fall into the trap.
We read them very much like we read novels.
I LOVE a good novel.
In fact, when I get DEEP into a good novel it’s a fantastic feeling.
And when I’m finished, I’m actually kind of sad.
Like I Was There
Like I just took a journey with REAL PEOPLE that I’ll never see again.
So, I look for another one.
This is normal behavior.
Humans LOVE stories.
But when we read self help, it unfortunately TRICKS us.
It’s like reading a novel.
But instead of fictional characters, we’re imagining a MUCH BETTER version of ourselves.
So when we finish THAT wonderful fantasy ride, it’s REALLY sad.
But self help SHOULD be like any other self development.
Real Skills Take Practice
If you wanted to learn Photoshop, that’s the SAME thing.
You want to IMPROVE your life by learning a new skill that could LEGITIMATELY make you more money.
Or if you sign up for a Tai Kwon Do class, you are doing something that could LEGITIMATELY increase your health and self esteem and self confidence.
One CRITICAL mistake in self help is assuming that all you need are new IDEAS in your brain.
This can work, but only if you have some skills to put those new ideas on.
Like a musician can take new ideas, like a new piece of music, and put them ON TOP OF existing skills.
But unless you are willing to identify and PRACTICE the underlying skills, you’re kind of missing the point.
Enjoy The Grind
But it’s a lot easier than most people think.
It’s NOT like ripping off a Band-Aid and getting it over with.
In fact, the biggest mistake people make is going too quickly.
The “secret” is to practice the RIGHT skills.
Slowly, easily, and comfortably.
So the practice itself is an enjoyable hobby.
And if you enjoy the practice, you’ll enjoy the results.
And that is what makes life VERY enjoyable.
When you get excited about YOUR OWN future.
Your realistic future.
That is BETTER than any fantasy novel.
