Return Of Tendonitis
A couple of weeks ago I went to see the doctor. I had really bad tendinitis. I have a history with tendinitis going back about 20 years. Most of the time I can handle it myself I know what to do.
If it starts to flareup I put ice on it I take a lot of Advil and I rest. Usually that’s enough to make it go away, but sometimes when it doesn’t go away I need to go see the doctor and get a shot of cortisone. Giving a shot of cortisone directly into the inflamed tendon makes it go away very quickly.
I know that it doesn’t treat the cause, only the symptom, but it’s a very quick relief to a very painful problem. One of the problems is when you go see a doctor when I go see the doctor and ask him for a shot of cortisone.
Doc, It’s Like This…
Most doctors need me to at least explain why I think I need a shot of cortisone. Some are doctors who want to see me for a few weeks and monitor the condition but because that’s very expensive I explain how long I’ve had this problem and explain all the stuff that they’ll find they do x-rays and find calcified tendons and usually that’s enough.
This one time it was enough and the doctor called the nurse and he was explaining to her to get a syringe of cortisone. Wile we were waiting he told me a story about the seminar he went to. I don’t know why he told me the story I think he was maybe just killing time.
He said that the seminar was put on by the pharmaceutical industry. It wasn’t really a seminar, it was kind of a multi-talk kind of conference where you could choose to see which kind of talks you wanted to listen to and one of the talks he saw was by a professor that cautioned against using medicines that haven’t been properly tested for safety.
Corner Cutting Drug Companies
Apparently there’s a lot of pharmaceutical companies that try to take shortcuts and rush products to market before they’ve been tested thoroughly for safety and these can cause some unexpected negative consequences.
He told the story that illustrated this. The story was about a doctor that had this drug that he initially wanted to develop to sell to the military to help soldiers decrease anxiety and increase confidence. If this worked for the military he thought maybe this might work for a general public anti-anxiety drug but he didn’t want to go through the entire product development process which took several years.
He wanted to go straight to animal testing. He went down to Mexico where he found an underground dog fighting competition. He found an owner of a dog that would allow the him to use his drug experimentally on his dog before the fight. He explained that it might kill his dog but he guaranteed that his dog would win the fight.
Dude Came Prepared
The dog owner understood that if he knew his dog was going to win the fight he could bet a lot of money on his dog so even if his dog died he could take his winnings and buy another dog.
They had to keep the secret otherwise nobody would bet against a dog that had some supersecret powerful military fighting drug coursing through his veins. The dogfight started in the dog with the secret military drug killed the other dog in about 20 seconds. Most of these dog fights don’t end in death. If the dog just gives up and the owner calls it and pulls his dog out.
This dog killed the other dog before that could happen. The problem was the dog wanted to keep killing. He started to growl in make threatening stances towards the people watching. The dog owner kind of figured this might happen as the doctor told him this might happen so the dog owner shot the dog.
Bullets Don’t Kill Super Dog
When he shot his dog it knocked him a couple of feet but it just made him angrier. When people saw that they started fleeing in all different directions and because everybody was fleeing in all different directions the dog owner couldn’t really try to shoot a again because there’s too many people running around.
The dog ended up killing about 20 people before he literally just dropped due to exhaustion.
This professor at this seminar said this true story is an example of why you must go through all the proper procedures before you test out any drug. I had noticed that the nurse had come in with the syringe while the doctor was telling me the story and he jabbed me with the syringe unexpectedly.
Ouch, Dude!
I screamed really loudly which was embarrassing because when the nurse first came in I noticed that she was very very cute and I had formulated a plan in my mind when I was done getting my cortisone shot of going to talk to her maybe ask for her phone number but because he had at me with a shot unexpectedly I yelped in pain.
So Much For My Pick Up Plan
The nurse giggled and walked out, ruining my chances. Never try drugs before they’re fully tested.
