Shoe Trader
I read this story about a guy. He got a pair of shoes for Christmas or something. He kept them in the box. Then like six months later, he traded them for a skateboard.
But then he kept the skateboard. Didn’t use it. And traded it for something else. And he kept doing that. He wanted to see how high up he could go.
There was this economics professor who wanted to demonstrated a fundamental principle behind all economies. So he gave everybody in his class a Ft-shirt. But they were all different colors and sizes.
Some had the right size, some didn’t. Some liked the colors they had, some didn’t.
How Happy Are You?
He polled the class, and asked by a show of hands, how “happy” they were with what they had. The average happiness score was 4.5 out of ten.
One of the problems with humans is we have these very old instincts. Hunger is the most obvious problem instinct today. But plenty of others are out of calibration.
One is that in the old days, we were always surrounded by people we knew. And not just knew casually, but knew our whole lives. And the only time we saw strangers, it was for one of two reasons.
Trade or Fight
To trade with one another, or to fight. So today, when we are around strangers, we always have a low level of anxiety since we don’t know if we are going to trade or to fight.
And we’re not with a group of close friends we’ve known our whole lives.
There was this one magic shop I went to. I heard about it from a friend. She told me I just had to go there, but she didn’t tell me why.
I went there, and there was this old lady working there. Everything was one dollar. But I had no idea what the stuff was or how it worked.
What Do I Pick
I asked the lady for some help picking something. She told me to close my eyes and listen to the pieces. That they would pick me, rather than me picking them.
So I did, and I was called to this small set of beads. It kind of reminded me of a set of Rosary beads.
I asked what to do. She told me to always keep my eyes open, and carry them with me.
Live Awake
There will be a time in the future when you remember this.
When you will know what to based on these ideas.
But it requires you keep your eyes and mind open.
That you not stay asleep like most people.
That you participate in life, rather than watch it happen.
Then you will know.
Fighting and Trading
If you think about it, fighting and trading is the same thing that happens between countries. We either having trading partners, or enemies.
It’s also why younger people can enjoy working retail, if their customers are in a good mood. This seems to be the best way of dealing with people so it doesn’t involve any anxiety.
He then told them to get up and trade their T-shirts with whomever they wanted. No limits. Trade as often as you wanted.
After they finished, they sat down and he again polled them on their level of happiness. Their new level of happiness was 7.5 out of ten.
Magic Increase In Happiness
He asked how did that happen. You went from an average of 4.5 to an average of 7.5. But you didn’t get anything extra. Nothing else was brought in. I didn’t give you anything else.
About ten years later, he ended up with a house. Not a nice house, not in such a great neighborhood. But he started out with a pair of shoes, and kept trading it for different stuff. He always kept the stuff he got in good shape.
Magic
Once upon a time there was nothing at all.
Now we have all this stuff. How did that happen?
