No Expectations
I have a friend that likes to set me up on blind dates. She’s been doing it for quite a while. I learned a long time ago that the best way to approach this is to go on there without any expectations whatsoever.
No expectations that we’ll click romantically. No expectations that we’d even be friends. That way if I going to their these meetings with no expectations I’ll be the most open and the most likely to have an enjoyable experience no matter what happens. This last time was no different.
This woman was clear right from the start that she was very very political she was very very passionate about her political beliefs and she needed her significant other to be equally passionate and to agree with all of her political beliefs.
Because I went there with zero expectations, I said cool tell me more. She told me what her beliefs and what she does and she told me about a friend of hers who was a reporter who has an equal and equally passionate set of political beliefs.
Pulitzer Prize Hopes
Her friend the reporter had a fantastic idea. She was first going to write this long exposé and then she would hopefully turn this long exposé into a book. The idea was to embed herself within a group of homeless people.
Not just briefly like on reality TV shows. Not just partially but for the whole two or three months she would live completely alone with homeless people and write down her experiences and a notebook. Not tweet not record videos not recorded anything just have a real homeless experience.
She would come back to do more research and she would use her experiences to describe everything. Then write the book. She found out some very very unsettling facts.
The first one is that once you become homeless you almost have zero chance of becoming normal again. It seems that the path from normal upstanding productive member of society to being a homeless person is a one-way ticket.
One Way Ticket
Once you enter into the realm of homelessness there’s almost no escape. One way that this barrier stays up between the homeless and regular society is homeless people every single day they have genuine concern and worry about how they’re going to get their daily food.
Most of us have never experienced any kind of serious worry about whether or not we will eat on any given day, but homeless people feel this worry every single day. What makes it even worse is almost all of them, while they can get their daily caloric needs met, they have to interface with normal society to get those needs met.
Every single day, in the process of satisfying their hunger, which will never go away, they’re forced to realize, to be reminded, to have it almost pushed into their face that they will never ever join normal society again.
This is like some kind of huge metaphorical barrier, like a one-way membrane that you can go into the homeless but you cannot come back out. There is kind of an artificial social membrane they’re keeping you in your place.
Instinctive Reversion
Some homeless people have decided that they are never ever going to even acknowledge the existence of normal society. This is the group of people that this reporter decided to join and live with and what she found out about this group was absolutely horrifying.
It’s understandable from a physiological, biological, human instinct point of view because this group of people decided to get their daily calories from other people. Meaning they were going to hunt and eat other people for their daily food.
Cannibalism is usually thought of as something that only happens in ceremonies and strange tribes once in a while, but in reality all of humans in our past were cannibals. In the past before the invention of agriculture getting your daily needs met by killing and eating other people was perfectly acceptable and perfectly normal.
In modern times whenever there’s a choice between starving to death and eating another human almost invariably we will choose to eat another human. The problem is once you start to live that way you can’t really ever go back.
Installation Of Insanity
When this reporter came back, her mind had been completely destroyed by what she had done because she had actually participated in the hunting and killing and eating of other people.
Before she went into this scenario she was a fantastic highly skilled highly gifted writer. She wrote beautifully and persuasively and passionately and emotionally powerfully but after this experience her writing was incomprehensible.
This woman I went on a date with said that she tried to make sense of her notebook it was absolutely incomprehensible and it took her a long time to even figure out what it happened because her communication skills had completely been destroyed by this experience.
Cops Don’t Care
Needless to say they didn’t call the cops because the cops really don’t care about what happens within the homeless society anyways they just figure out of sight out of mind.
This is one of the reasons I enjoy going on dates like this especially when you go in there without having any expectations. When you meet people without any expectations it somehow allows them to be themselves and when you can interact with people in a way that allows them to be themselves you are forced to face the realization that most people out there are not like you.
