Business Meeting
A couple of weeks ago I had to go to a hotel downtown to meet one of my clients. He was in town for a lot of serious business meanings and he wanted to have kind of a between meeting brainstorming session. To get a lot of contracts to hopefully close.
I met with him and we went over a lot of techniques and strategies and we role-played a lot of the problems he thought might come up until he was satisfied that he could handle all the questions.
When I was done I went down to the lobby. I was in kind of a good mood emotion, a good mood after I successfully helped one of my clients and so I I called an uber but I made sure that it wasn’t critical. It didn’t really matter when he came. I was kind of wandering around the hotel lobby and I came across this seminar room that looked like they had just finished teaching a seminar.
Seminar Leftovers
Inside you could see all of the paper on the walls. The kind of paper this on those big things that people write on it for the seminar room and as it looked like as they were writing stuff they would take it off and then put on the walls around the room.
When I looked inside the stuff written on these piece of paper it was very very strange. It was, it looked like some kind of mathematical equations but I couldn’t quite tell because it was using a lot of symbols that I wasn’t familiar with. Some of it looked like calculus but looked like a high-level kind of string theory mathematical analysis that I’m not quite familiar with.
It looked like the seminar was over because you could see the kind of empty Styrofoam coffee cups in the back. People stuff had been gone. It looked like it’d finished for the day. This was a Sunday afternoon. It seemed like it was the kind the last day of a two or three day seminar.
Dude…Huh?
While I was in the middle of this room looking at all of these strange mathematical equations the teacher came in and he asked me if I had any questions. I guess he thought I was a student. I admitted that I had just wandered in and I asked him what these equations meant.
He asked me what my level of mathematical fluency was and I told him that I had a degree in physics. I took calculus and partial differential equations but that was like 30 years ago. He kind of smiled and said yeah this is gonna be a little bit over your head, but let me try to explain anyways.
It turns out that after the Bronze Age Collapse and before the rise of Greek culture there was a very advanced, very secretive cult of mathematicians there were very similar to the Pythagorean cult that came up with the Pythagorean theorem.
Ancient Mathematical Cults
It turns out that the a lot of these ancient mathematicians and in Greece were kind like these religious cults and instead of studying the different gods they studied mathematical principles. This very early cult came up with a very startling mathematical conclusion.
They discovered something very similar to the circle of fifths. The circle of fifths is another thing that the ancient Greeks discovered when they started thinking about sound as far as frequencies and wavelengths and how different sounds are relate to different pitches and different wavelengths will cause different sounds.
That kind of is the basis for Western music and the circle of fifths. He said that this ancient cult of mathematicians found a similar circle of mathematical equations, very much like our Western circle of fifths. You have a circle with 12 notes on it. You start at the top new go around and each time you go to the next one it’s five steps up.
Around The Circle
Go around in you get back to that the same note again. If you’re a musician you know you can use the circle of fifths to come up with some chord progressions for music. These ancient mathematicians they found a circle of mathematical equations.
They found 12 similar basic foundational mathematical equations around this circle of mathematics. But these equations had some very very interesting properties.
Each equation seemed to be completely different from all the others, but each equation could be used as a base source to prove everything in the known universe. It could be used as a base equation to prove all of the mathematical principles. But it could also be disproved by all the other equations on the circle of mathematics.
Twelve Independent Equations
Which meant that on the circle of mathematics you have these 12 completely different equations. Each of these equations could be used as a base to prove everything mathematically, but each equation could be disproved by all of the other equations.
Each equation could not only be used to prove the existence of everything but it could also be disproved by all these other mathematical equations on the circle which they themselves could also be used to prove everything.
The whole purpose of this seminar was to try to figure out what exactly the this meant. The only conclusion they could come to is that essentially everything that we think is true is really just a highly systematic hallucination.
Self Contained Hallucinations
So long as our hallucination is consistent, so long as the mathematical equations we use to prove and verify and maintain our hallucination are consistent, we can live within this hallucination.
Their theory is that what happened when the Bronze Age collapsed was that all of these different societies had slightly different hallucinations about what they thought reality was and once these hallucinations came in contact with one another they canceled each other out. That’s why society essentially collapsed during the Bronze Age.
Ancient Greek culture kind of figured this out. They were worried that if anyone found out about the circle of mathematics it would lead to massive destruction and so they purposely kept it secret.
Everything Is Imaginary
As far as I can tell, as far as I could tell, the seminar that this circle of mathematical equations essentially proves that everything is a hallucination. It is actually true with those Enlightenment philosophers found out.
That the only thing that we know for certain is that, “I think therefore I am.” We have this idea in our mind that we are thinking. We have these thoughts, we had the self-awareness but that’s all that we really know is true. We have this idea that there’s this world around us that everything that we could do to possibly prove that this world around us exists those proofs themselves could be a hallucination.
All we really know is that we exist. Whether or not other people exist it’s hard to tell. Whether or not we actually interact with other people the way we think we do it’s hard to tell. All we can really know for certain is that we exist inside our own minds. We have this self-awareness, we have this thought, we have these self communication patterns that run around in our minds.
No Independent Test Possible
There’s no way to tell if were actually living in an actual reality hallucination or some kind of computer simulation. He said that was kind of the purpose of the seminar. To try to discuss the meaning of this circle of mathematical equations which seems to prove that everything is just a hallucination.
I left and I kind of wandered around in a very confused daze. I completely forgot about my uber. I went outside. I wandered around downtown for a couple of hours. I thought about going into a bar and having a few shots of whiskey to hopefully clear my mind of this confusion but I didn’t do that.
I eventually got on a bus and rode home. The guy from the business meeting called me a couple days later and said that all of his contracts were signed as he had expected and he had successfully overcome all the objections that I had coached him on.
Cracks In My Brain
I still have a lingering sense of weirdness when I think about the reality around us. Whether everything we see is real or maybe were just living in a hallucination.
