Our Memory Sucks
It’s a very demonstrable fact that human memory is very very weak. We’ve all had experiences where somebody told us their name and we later forgot it even thought we wanted to remember it. We all have experiences being told what to study for a particular test in school. We studied but we only get a C or maybe a B.
The idea of a newspaper story is based on the idea that journalists have to go out and find pieces of information. But because those pieces of information are not very interesting on their own they have to be kind of forced into a story format with a good guy and a bad guy and underdog and an evil oppressor.
Only when these raw facts are put in story form are they kind of interesting. It’s kind of an accepted fact that winners of wars write the history books.
History Written By The Winners
If you assume a basic probability that half the wars are won by the bad guys and half of the wars are one but the good guys, that means that half of the history that we read his been written by bad guys which have probably rewritten it to make themselves look better.
Since they do this, it’s probably equally likely that the good guys also rewrite history just a little bit to make themselves look better than they were.
This gives us a kind of a weird idea that the things that we think happened in history are probably not true. The things that we think happened on a daily basis that we read through the news are probably not true because at the very least responding to some kind of a narrative that makes them seem more interesting than they are.
Experimental Evidence
They’ve done lot of experiments where they have a bunch of people standing around and then an unexpected event happens and they ask people what that unexpected event was and nobody can accurately remember with that unexpected event was.
If you look back through your own memories you’ll find that your entire life is a continuous sequence of these unexpected events which we can’t remember very well.
If you know anything about the legal system you know that eyewitness testimony is the weakest part of any case just because when something happens we can’t remember it very well.
Entire Life Is Hallucination
If you consider that your entire life is made up of these memories that you can’t really remember that means almost everything that we think is true is a hallucination.
History is not true because it was rewritten by the winners of wars. The news that we read on a daily basis is not entirely accurate because of the way they make it more interesting. Our own memories are not true because we can remember events as they happen.
Our own sense of self can’t be accurate because will be make up our sense of self based on our memories. The idea is that everything that we think is happening around us, everything that we think happened to us in the past is really one gigantic hallucination.
Good News – Bad News
Now this could be good news because once you accept that everything is a hallucination, everything is inaccurate, everything is something that is been spun in one direction or the other.
This means you can rewrite your own hallucination and create your own hallucination based on however you want it to be.
