I don’t like to turn on the bathroom light at night.
So when I wake up, and need to use the restroom, I kind of feel my way in.
If I turn the light on, it might wake me up and I won’t be able to go back to sleep.
And even though I know my own bathroom very well, I still need to feel myself around.
It’s dark and I’m half asleep.
I have a couple of places I shoot for.
And it’s always hit and miss.
This way, that way, etc.
Same when I wake up want to check the time.
I need to fumble around in the dark to find the light button on my alarm clock.
Every human does this.
Even in our own homes, that we’ve lived in for many years.
We need to “fumble around” in the dark.
This is PURE trial and error.
Or as they like to say in NLP, “trial and feedback.”
Closer And Closer
Doesn’t matter what you call it, you need both kinds of feedback to zero in on your target.
Positive and negative.
Suppose you opened a sandwich shop.
You only knew that people liked sandwiches.
But what kind, you had no idea.
So you made five different kinds.
Two sold really well.
The other three, not so much.
The two that sold really well feels good.
But the three that didn’t sell well are EXTREMELY important data points.
You know what NOT to do.
If you can only make 100 sandwiches per week, continuing to make sandwiches that don’t sell well is dumb.
So you need to know what TO make as well as what NOT to make.
And the only way to do this is by trial and error.
Same goes for practicing free throws, or anything else.
Your mind-body system needs to know what works, as well as what doesn’t work.
To zero in on the target.
Guided missiles are the same.
They veer away from their target, and they correct to move back toward their target.
If you wanted to balance a chair on one if its legs, you’d do the same thing.
It tilts one way, you move it back towards equilibrium.
Always “balancing” with you moving your hand slightly.
Evolution is the same, but much more complicated and random.
The environment is always changing in unpredictable ways.
Those animals living within that environment that manage to keep up get to live.
Those that don’t, don’t.
Every obstacle you meet in life, big or small is critical.
Filled with information to live your life better.
Most run away or try to go around obstacles.
That’s like running away from success.
Instead, embrace and even seek obstacles.
Every one you crash through is one step closer to a life of mastery.
