Hypnotic Amnesia
I had a friend go to this hypnosis show recently. He volunteered to go up on stage.
The hypnotist made him forget the number three. And he gave him a post hypnotic suggestion to not remember the number three for three days.
He asked his permission before hypnotizing him and he said yes.
Over the next two days, my friends and I tried to trick him into saying the number three, but we couldn’t. It was impossible.
Chasing Amy Theory
One of Kevin Smith’s movies is called Chasing Amy. The title comes from one of the characters whose first girlfriend was named Amy.
The theory is that if the first person you fall in love with breaks your heart, you’ll be subconsciously trying to find that person in every subsequent relationship.
All our instincts were calibrated for a much different type of environment than the one in which we live.
Love Critical To Survival
Since love, relationships and making more people are critical to our survival, there are a lot of instincts surrounding this.
If you imagine a young couple falling in love in ancient times, it contains most of the Cialdini laws of influence.
Every time the young couple see each other they fall a little bit deeper, leveraging the law of commitment and consistency.
When the guy goes hunting every day, there is no contact and the girl doesn’t know when she’s going to see him again, leveraging scarcity.
Social Proof Love
The entire tribe likely supports the relationships, leveraging social proof.
All this is significantly enhanced when they finally have sex.
All this needed to make sure ancient people stayed together long enough to raise a healthy child.
Unconscious Destiny
Jung, a contemporary of Freud, said that we are driven by our unconscious.
And if we don’t make the unconscious conscious, we’ll mistakenly believe that we are driven by fate.
What this means is we are driven by instincts and other programs that are outside of our conscious awareness.
Neurology tells us our conscious minds are not a chooser, like we believe, but an after the fact storyteller.
Know Your Instincts
What Jung means is unless we understand our instincts and our other subconscious beliefs, we’ll continue to do things we don’t want to do, or not be able to do things we do want to do.
We can see how our love instinct helped to create healthy relationships in the past, but can significantly mess us up in modern times.
Ancient love was supposed to be a one time, life-long event.
But today, it’s nothing like this.
Instincts Out Of Whack
Kind of like our hunger instinct kept us safe and healthy in the past, but today is responsible for all our diseases.
According to the Chasing Amy theory, we could separate people into two categories.
One half, who have a subconscious broken heart and are looking for something they won’t ever find.
Heart Breakers
The other half, who did the heart breaking.
For them, they learned that love is shallow and temporary, since that was their first experience.
No wonder modern dating is such a dumpster fire of despair.
Wait, Now I Remember
After three days my friend said he remembered everything.
That everything was his choice.
Which didn’t make a lot of sense since he was very congruent in not being able to remember three.
Double Edged Amnesia
Which means this hypnotist gave him two post hypnotic suggestions.
One to forget the number three for three days.
And two to believe it was his choice to forget after he remembered.
