It’s been said that people will do anything for those who:
“Encourage their dreams, justify their failures, allay their fears, confirm their suspicions and throw rocks at their enemies.”
If you want to sell something to people, that will do it.
If you want to persuade anybody, that will do it.
If you want people to sign up for your cult, that will do it.
This is a very accurate description of human nature.
We all have dreams.
We don’t want to own our failures.
We want somebody to tell us our fears aren’t real.
We want somebody to make sure our suspicions are real, and we aren’t crazy.
And we absolutely want somebody who help us in the “us vs. them” fight.
Dale Carnegie once said that everybody is always listening to their favorite radio station, WII-FM.
Or, “what’s in it for me?”
Humans are made up of a collection of instincts.
The most powerful is our ego.
The most relentless is our ego.
The slipperiest is our ego.
Everybody wants to be number one.
Everybody, now and tens of thousands of years ago, thought their idea was better than everybody else’s idea.
This was a fantastic system.
Everybody was trying to out-perform each other.
Back in the day, it was a productivity contest.
An animal killing contest.
Whoever could DEMONSTRATE that their plans and strategies and outcomes really WERE better than everybody else’s would get the best rewards.
This ego-instinct made us always compete to see who was number one.
Make Them See
A little voice inside us that says, “Prove to the world how great YOU are!”
In modern times, the ego CAN get us into trouble.
So it’s recommended to see the ego as a bad thing.
However, the ego can be the greatest hack ever.
That quote from before, about throwing rocks at their enemies, appeals directly TO their ego.
If you appeal directly to their ego, they’ll do whatever you want.
But you need to be careful.
Just blatant ego praise won’t get you very far.
But carefully directed questions that allow their ego to SHINE will make them feel very good.
And they’ll do ANYTHING to keep that good feeling.
