Small And Hungry
It’s a common phenomenon for small companies with zero market share to take a ton of risk. Since they don’t have anything to lose, and everything to gain, this makes perfect sense. Then as they slowly claw some market share and customers away from other more established, existing companies, they shift slightly.
Instead of only wanting to GET market share, they want to protect the amount of market share they have. The more they get, the more they shift into protective mode.
There was this very interesting public speaking seminar a few years ago. When it started, everybody thought they were in the wrong seminar. But at the same time, they were not so upset. They figured since it was a public speaking seminar, they’d have to do a bunch of public speaking practice.
Wrong Seminar?
But since they weren’t doing anything that seemed related to public speaking, people were kind of relieved that they didn’t have to get up and talk. Instead, everybody practiced various juggling techniques. First with one ball, then two balls, and finally three balls.
Once everybody had mastered three balls, we started doing things like juggling three balls while hopping on one foot. Juggling three balls while hopping on one foot while telling silly jokes about how a student studies on an airplane because he was in high school.
There was a psychic seminar that I went to. It started out just as a curiosity, and the teacher said she was going to teach us be become psychic through simple communication techniques. It was local and not expensive, so I figured we had nothing to lose.
Mirroring and Matching
The first day was simple rapport techniques. Then we moved into lie detector tests, where we could calibrate each others lying and truth telling energy. Then we did a bunch of exercises where we mixed various content with various emotions, and slowly learned to differentiate between the two.
There are two diverse and interesting ideas about the ability to increase one’s intelligence. On the one hand, it would seem like any technique that was proven to increase your intelligence would be a sure fire best seller. But upon closer inspection, it’s clear why this would be impossible.
People with genetically high intelligence, and the wealth, power and social status that comes with that would be very much opposed to techniques that the riff raff could use to become their equals.
Hey, I Might Do That…
The idea of doing an exercise over a long period of time might be compelling, but on the other hand the way to get a six pack is pretty straightforward, but few people have a six pack.
So if you did have a real technique to increase your intelligence, there wouldn’t seem to be a market for it. Not only would most people be too lazy to use it, but most academics would resist it as it would be increased competition for their intellectual market share.
But suppose you did find a technique that really did increase your intelligence. Suppose you did learn how, through simple exercise, to improve your intelligence slowly and gradually over time. Would you share it, or would you keep it secret?
Would You Share Free Money?
If found an ATM that didn’t have any cameras, didn’t keep any records, but always spit out stacks of hundreds when you entered your birthday, would you tell people, or keep it secret?
The second day everybody reported the strangest dreams. We all sat around and shared our dreams, and after about an hour, it felt like we all had the same collective dream. Then we just kind of eased back into the rapport exercises and we were able to seemingly read each other’s minds.
It was like the exercises we did the day before were the basic components of psychic energy. The instructor said all people are psychic. If you compare the different combinations of just facial expressions to the number of possible phrases in any language, the facial expressions can convey far more information.
We Used To Be More Psychic
From her perspective, we used to be much more psychic a long time ago. But as we evolved spoken language, which significantly decreased the amount of information we could transmit, but significantly increased the ideas we could store in our brains, our thinking minds took over our psychic minds.
It turns out that if you can stand in front of a group of people juggling and telling silly jokes about how eight is afraid of seven because seven ate nine then giving a speech about the benefits of dental floss is pretty easy and straightforward.
All companies, once they get to a certain size, spend most of their time and money and efforts not on innovation, but on sales and protecting market share. And if they are big enough, and have enough money, they lobby congress to pass laws to make all us normal people legally required to buy their product. This is the holy grail of business.
Why Star Wars Sucks
This doesn’t just happen in business. This happens with creative people as well. When nobody knew who George Lucas was, he made a couple of the best movies ever made. But once he sold Star Wars to Disney, they started to suck pretty hard, since they became a vehicle for selling toys and not conveying ancient mythological truths.
