Backpacking Trip
I was backpacking with friend once and I had a particularly frightening experience.
We’d been planning this trip, a five day loop in the sierras, for a few months.
Part of it involved taking a shortcut that was suggested in the guide.
Shortcuts Never Work Out
We got halfway through this shortcut, and I decided not to take it.
The problem my friend was already halfway up the mountain, so I shouted at him that I was going around, he nodded, and I took off.
One of the misunderstandings of Darwin’s theory of evolution is by making some assumptions that the theory does not cover.
Species Not Life
For example, it doesn’t intend to explain why or how life was created in the first place.
It doesn’t intend to explain how life changed from single organisms to massively complex life forms.
It only intends to explain the basic process of natural selection, and how this gives rise to different species from originally similar animals.
Viking Origin Story
The origin story of the Vikings is pretty interesting.
When Rome first started to rise, it essentially attracted all the people in the area toward Rome.
More roads, more chances of commerce, better systems of irrigation, etc.
But then when Rome collapsed, people kind of spread out, and became more sparsely populated.
Germans and Romans
A few of the Germanic people’s who were attracted to Roman style cities in Europe slowly migrated north into what is now called Scandinavia.
I saw lecture at a spiritual retreat about the theory explaining the split between the spiritual and the physical.
It’s a common idea that we are not physical beings having a spiritual experience, but we are spiritual beings having a physical experience.
But this guy’s theory was that we are both, all the time.
Inhale and Exhale
When you inhale, you want oxygen.
But when you are filled with oxygen, you now want only to exhale oxygen.
No matter how much you crave oxygen, this desire for take in oxygen will always transform into a desire to expel carbon dioxide.
Hot and Cold
No matter how cold it is in winter, when we crave warmth, that will always transform into summer, when we crave cold.
The entire universe is essentially breathing.
At one of the spectrum, is the pure collective consciousness of the spiritual.
At another end of the spectrum, there is complete separation of this consciousness in different individual entities.
Particles and Fields
Similarly, there is the never ending oscillation between energy fields, and the particles that arise from these energy fields.
Or the relationship between matter and energy.
You can have pure matter, or you can have pure energy, or you can have a mixture of both, one shifting into the other.
Overarching Intelligence
Among all these is an overarching system under which these oscillations always exist.
There is an overarching universal intelligence within which the infinite oscillation between the physical and the spiritual takes place.
Just like there is an overarching human intelligence, under which the never ending shift between inhaling oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide exists.
His ultimate theory was that we, as individuals, both physical and spiritual, cannot begin to comprehend this universal intelligence.
Nested Oscillations
We cannot do so any more than our lungs or the CO2 we exhale and the O2 can inhale can comprehend our individual consciousness.
After about 200 or 300 years, the Germanic people’s who slowly migrated into Scandinavia essentially became a different culture, with a different language.
When their population grew too large for the land to support, that’s when they started their Viking raids, which lasted for another 300 years.
Some say the only reason the Viking raids eventually stopped, allowing the flourishing of the high middle ages, was that the Vikings essentially had stolen all they could steal.
Viking Impact On History
But it is undeniable that the Viking raids all over Europe during the early middle ages had a significant impact on the course of European history.
Darwin famously came up with his theory while visiting the Galapagos islands.
He noticed the animals on this island were much different than their counterparts on the mainland.
Separation Induces Re-Calibration
He theorized this is what happens when you take any species and separate them from their origin.
They essentially evolve into a completely different species.
Since the new environment, in this case the Galapagos islands, are different than where they came from, the driving force of life will essentially re-calibrate them to their new environment.
Once I found my way back to the main trail, and started hiking, I realized my error.
Long and Lonely
We originally took the shortcut to save us about six hours of hiking.
Had we hiked on the main trail, we would have had to gone around a couple of mountains.
While I was pretty sure I would eventually make it around and meet up with my friend, it was pretty humbling.
This was before cell phones, so it was just me, the stuff I could carry on my back, inside of this massive wilderness.
Seriousness of Mind
Had I fallen and twisted my ankle, for example, I wouldn’t be able to do anything except hope somebody found me before I died.
Obviously, and eventually I made it around and we met up again.
But that was some serious time I had to spend with my own thoughts, my own fears and my own worries about what might happen.
Sometimes separations can create fantastic benefits.
Other times they can be very, very dangerous.
