Verbal Smackdown Party
Conversations are a lot of fun.
Especially competitive ones between friends.
Playfully combative, humorous, etc.
Who can come up with the best smackdown.
Who can tell the best story.
Who can come up with the best insult for a mutually hated politician.
These “idea contests” are deep and ancient.
Not just in humans, in a lot of creatures.
Take bees, for example.
Every morning they all go out looking for food.
Then they come back and report their findings.
Bee Communication
They do this figure 8 “dance” to do so.
All the rest watch each bee do his dance.
Like a bunch of kids in a park taking turns breakdancing.
Whichever bee has found the biggest source of food is the “winner.”
They all go off in that direction.
The size, the direction and the distance is all “encoded” into that figure eight dance.
Of course, the bees don’t really know what they are doing.
Nor do they get a prize or any kind of social validation by finding the biggest food.
The word “drone” which often means a mindless worker is based on bees.
Bees are “eusocial.”
This means they are born into their job.
None of these bees have any chances of getting a promotion.
Self Aware Humans
Humans, on the other hand, are different.
Way back in he day, humans would kind of do the same thing.
Only they would go out and say WHERE the food was, they would bring some back.
And whoever brought back the most, got the biggest rewards.
Of course, ancient dudes didn’t likely hunt alone.
They went out in teams, organized by hierarchy.
So the dude that DID get the most love, was the leader of these teams.
How would you BECOME the leader?
Idea Presentation
First, you had to have some good ideas about how to kill a big enough animal to feed everybody.
But just having that idea wasn’t enough.
Since everybody wanted to BE the leader, you had to “enter” your idea in the daily idea contest.
So your idea had to be a good idea, and it had to be presented with a ton of confidence.
This is the SAME thing that solves plenty problems today.
Stick a bunch of engineers in a room, let them have an idea contest, the winner solves the problem, and gets the reward.
Promotions, money, etc.
So here we are today, with this ancient “idea contest” driving our conversations.
Usually it’s pretty fun.
With friends it’s a very useful way to spar or playfight to help us prepare for the harsh world.
Eliminate Negativity
But sometimes, this “idea contest” can turn pretty negative.
Somebody who NEEDS to slam everybody else’s idea just so they can win the idea contest.
Very much like a school yard bully.
How can you defeat these guys?
Pretty easily, as it turns out.
