Status Monkeys
Plenty of studies indicate that we humans always self-organize into hierarchies.
For example, they’ll take ten people, and put them in a group.
Then they’ll give the group a task.
Something a bit confusing they need to do, or a problem they need to solve.
Without fail, they organize into a hierarchy.
One person up on top.
Everybody else eagerly following the orders of the guy or gal up on top.
This is human nature.
You’ll see hierarchies everywhere.
But here’s the interesting part.
Let’s say they do that experiment on ten different groups.
Ten people each.
Ten Leaders
So they’ve got ten leaders for the ten groups.
They put those ten leaders into one group.
And they repeat the experiment.
They give that group a task.
And guess what?
That group of previous leaders will organize into a hierarchy.
One person on top, the rest obedient order takers.
And they do this with the bottom people.
The original ten groups each have one person at the very bottom.
And they put those bottom people in a group.
And once again, those bottom people organize into a hierarchy.
One person on top, and nine eager order followers.
So, what does all this mean?
Followers
Most of the time, most people (9 out of 10) are eager to follow orders.
Which means if you confidently give people orders to any random person, there is a ninety percent chance they’ll follow them.
There are two important elements here.
One is you must believe the orders you give will help both them and you.
And two, the orders you give can’t be too far out there.
If you walk up to a stranger and say, “Give me your money,” it won’t work.
But if you talk to them just a little bit, you can slowly guide them a slippery slope.
Slide Their Brains
From wherever they are, to where you want them to be.
And the work horse of this slippery slope is the embedded command.
A command that is hidden inside of a sentence.
That is so low key they won’t realize you are giving them commands.
But they’ll follow them anyway.
These are very powerful, very versatile language patterns.
And they match PERFECTLY with the common human desire to be told what to do.
Sure, they’ll take a bit of practice.
But practicing this one skill will enhance your life in many ways.
You’ll strengthen your frame immeasurably.
You’ll have a much easier time socially.
You’ll get more admiration and respect from more people.
So, what are you waiting for?
