Lenny Bruce
Lenny Bruce was a very famous comedian way back in the day. He was famous for being somebody that pushed the limits of what you are allowed to say in public. In fact he was famous for getting arrested for saying and doing things that you were allowed to say and do in public.
Later George Carlin came up with his famous routine the seven things you can’t say on TV. This was based on the idea that the federal government regulates what is broadcast through the air and the seven things would get you in serious trouble if you said them on TV. You could say them in public you just couldn’t say them on TV.
There’s a very common archetype in history of the court jester. It seems that we humans tend to have this idea that so long as at least somebody is able to voice our common concerns that’s not so bad.
Disallowed Words
What’s really bad is if we’re not allowed to voice these common concerns. So the role of the court jester throughout history has been to say things that most people don’t feel comfortable saying but somehow still need to be said.
It seems just hearing somebody say these things that we’re all afraid to say will make us feel a little bit better. Essentially a human and a society both have a need to express our truth from time to time. If you are an individual and you feel there’s things about you that you cannot face you cannot address you cannot talk about those things will eventually destroy you.
If you are a society and you feel there are certain things that can’t be spoken can be talked about can’t be addressed those things will eventually destroy you. Whatever those things are sometimes just saying them is all you need.
Bottled Up Stuff Kills You
If you’re a human if you’re an individual and you have some things he needs to discuss, a lot of times just saying those things out loud will take away their power. The more you hide them the more you keep them from yourself the more they will grow in power.
This is true as an individual. This is true as a society. Any society that shuts off this natural path of communication has eventually been destroyed by those same things that they want to keep from being expressed. One of the best examples of the court jester and action was ancient Greece.
Part of the part of catharsis was to have these plays were very political. And the plays were very clear metaphors for what was actually happening in society. Oftentimes you would have these characters that were supposed to be like current politicians.
Emperor’s A Moron!
The other characters would absolutely rip on this character pretending to be a politician while the real politician was in the audience watching all of this happen. While this was kind of uncomfortable for everybody most including the politician, it was necessary for society to be able to express the stuff.
Of course the Golden age of Greece only lasted for about 100 years before they turned from a republic into an empire. Empires are notorious for keeping certain things out of the public consciousness.
Up until recently guys like George Carlin and Lenny Bruce have been willing to take one for the team and say things on stage say things on TVs that we’re all thinking.
Common Signs Of Doom
It seems that lately this might not be possible anymore. Like every other society as soon as they make certain ideas illegal to talk about the end of society is not far behind.
