Music Tutorial
The other night I was watching this very interesting music tutorial. The guy was talking about songwriting strategies. He started off by going over the basics song structure.
The intro, the verse, the chorus, the break, the verse, the outro. Then he started talking about how to choose a chord progression. It turns out that almost every popular song in Western music has almost the same chord progression.
It also turns out that you cannot copyright a chord progression which means you can take your favorite song, you can take a popular song, you can run it through some software, you can extract the chord progression. You can use the exact same port progression, and all you need to make different is the melody and the lyrics.
Self Development
This makes it a lot easier. A long time ago I went to this seminar on how to create self development products. At the time, the most popular self-development product was these cassette tape packs. You’d buy these packs on like improved confidence or sales strategies or even some metaphysical ideas.
Each one of these cassette packs had six cassettes. Each cassette had two sides of 30 minutes each. What most people did was they would buy these cassette packs and they would listen to them to and from work for about a month and they would buy new one.
This was kind of a great way to use your time wisely. To listen to useful information while you’re driving to and from work. The company that produced most of these cassette packs was Nightingale Conant. They’re still around but back then they were very very a big name. The vice president of marketing came to talk about how to create your own cassette packs. How to create the most profitable selling setbacks.
Well Researched
They had a ton of research. They had been doing this for like 50 years and they knew exactly what sold well. They knew what didn’t sell well. They knew what techniques worked in they knew what techniques didn’t work so well.
One of the interesting aspects of science, one of the most mind-boggling aspects of science is that the stuff that we see around us only represents 10% of the known universe. When you think of what makes up reality usually people think in terms of protons and neutrons and electrons and then the subatomic particles that make up the protons and neutrons.
In reality that only accounts for 10% of the stuff. When scientists look out into the galaxy, they see the effects of matter but they don’t know how to measure that matter directly. They see the effects by studying how these galaxies interact with one another based on the laws of gravity.
Hmm. Something’s Missing
There is not nearly enough matter to account for all the gravitational effects that they can see. So they’ve dubbed this non-measurable universe as dark matter and dark energy not because it’s evil just because they haven’t no idea what it is. They have no idea what properties it has. They have no idea how to detect it.
All they know is that of the stuff that exists in the universe we can only measure about 10% of it. There was a scientist who had been working on this problem for a long time. Instead of working on it for purely scientific academic reasons, he was trying to figure out a way to leverage the existence of the dark universe with dark matter and dark energy to create alchemy.
Alchemy is something that humans have sought to create since the dawn of time. Essentially alchemy is taking something like sand or rocks or any kind of very cheap base metal and turning it into gold or silver or some other kind of very expensive metal.
Conservation of Matter and Energy
If you do a chemical reaction in our universe, you have to balance both sides. You have to count up the energy in the matter on one side of the equation and they have to equal the energy and matter on the other side of the equation. This is called the conservation of matter and energy and whenever you’re doing a chemical reaction it’s a great way to do some accounting, some bookkeeping to make sure you end up with all of the same stuff for the same matter and energy that you start with.
His idea was to create a chemical reaction across the barrier between our universe and the dark universe. He had to create some type of portal that would connect our universe to the dark universe.
His idea was that if you set up some kind of chemical reaction across the two universes you could violate the law of conservation of energy since we don’t have any idea what the laws of physics are in the dark universe. After much tinkering around in experimentation he found the perfect balance point was about 9 to 1.
Nine To One Seems About Right
If he started off with a 9 kg of base metal he could turn those 9 kg of base metal into 1 kg of gold. So as long as he kept that balance correct, as long as he put in nine and got out one he was okay. He tried to get on more than one per nine it never worked. The equation was not sustainable.
When he first realized he could do this he tried to get more than 10% back but whenever he try to get more than 10% back the reaction wasn’t sustainable and it kind of fizzled out. Whenever he tried to set up a reaction to get less than 10% it never really got going enough. He found the perfect ratio between base metal and gold was about 9 to 1 ratio or 90% base metal and 10% gold is return.
Once he kept the ratio at this level he could get a continuous stream of gold out of this portal. Every 9 kg of base metal that he put into this portal he got out 1 kg of gold. Because this guy was only interested in wealth and not academic science he was a little bit concerned about the misuse of this device.
Fine Balance Point
Because if you could put in 9 kg of base metal and get out 1 kg of gold there’s no telling what other kinds of reactions you could set up across this trans-dimensional portal. You could get uranium 238 out which you could use to make nuclear weapons.
You could get out some horrifically deadly biological weapons. The only thing he used this for was to create gold. When he got enough gold for himself he shut this experiment down now. They look out into the universe and they figure there’s 90% stuff that we can’t measure there is no law there is no rule there’s no reason to believe that that 90% stuff is all the same stuff.
It could very well be that there is maybe 10 different universes and each one of the universes has its own kind of matter and energy and laws of physics. Or it could be there’s a lot more and so even in the same space and that you’re in right now there could be 10 coexisting parallel universes that are all existing in their own type of matter their own type of energy thrown type of laws of physics.
They’re Looking At You
They might be trying to figure out how to contact us at this very moment. The magic balance point of the guy from Nightingale Conant said is that because most people have to have a lot of familiarity all of the time if you try to create a self-help product that has too much new stuff it won’t sell well and the people that buy they won’t try it.
They found over a lot of research that the best balance is 90% familiarity and 10% new stuff. If you stuck to this ratio of teaching people 10% new stuff at a time you will sell the most products and you will get the best results. Even if you’re trying to do something on your own, if you try to do more than 10% you’ll run out of motivation and you’ll stop.
If you try to do less than 5% it won’t be interesting and you won’t keep going. That 10% new stuff on regular basis is kind of a very very researched balance point that creates the most amount of human potential.
Copy Popular Chord Progressions
If you’re taking about writing music, according to this guy in this tutorial, all songs are essentially 90% familiar and 10% new. That 90% familiar is that the stuff that you can copy that’s not copyrightable. That stuff, the chord progression the baseline, the drum line.
The only thing that they can copyright is the melody and that’s really the only thing that you need to create. You can take any kind of popular music you can run through filters you can copy the chord progression you can copy the basic baseline you can copy the basic drum line.
All you really need to do is create the melody and the lyrics. If you hold to this rule of keeping it at 90% familiar and 10% new you can be a very profitable songwriter.
