Find The Leaker
There is a very common trope found in spy movies if you’re in charge of an organization and you suspect that somebody in your organization is leaking information there’s an easy way to find who the leak is.
The first thing you do is you need to come up with several different stories. Each story having several different pieces of information within the story. Then you tell each person in your organization a different story with different pieces of information within that different story.
One way that troops of chimps maintain social cohesion is by taking the bugs out of each other’s hair. They don’t do this randomly or haphazardly. They utilize a tit-for-tat system. Every chimp that has bugs picked out of their hair remembers who did the picking and they remember that they all that other champ to return the favor.
Bugs and Tit for Tat
It’s a very easy way to create social cohesion because everyone helps each other out. They’ve evolved this kind of score-keeping system to make sure that everyone contributes to the welfare of the entire group.
There is a very interesting movie about a priest. He was transferred to this parish Elementary school from another parish. Nobody knew why he was transferred. This movie took place in the 50s. It wasn’t long before all of the nuns started to gossip and spread rumors about why he was transferred.
He was transferred under some strange type of secrecy where nobody could find out why he had been transferred. One of the things they started to watch was how he interacted with the kids. Of course once somebody got the idea that he had been transferred because of improper behavior around children then confirmation bias kicked in.
Rumors Lead To Rumors
This fueled more similar rumors about being kicked out of his previous parish because of the way interacted with the kids.
One of the ways that they believe humans kept ancient tribal cohesion is through gossip this was very similar to how chimps pick bugs out of each other’s hair.
If you tell somebody some juicy piece of information they owe you one and they’ll later tell you some juicy piece of information. Chimps that kept all the chimps free from bugs and it also maintained tribal cohesion at the same time. For humans it maintain that everyone was clued into all the tribal information and it maintain tribal cohesion through the tit-for-tat system.
Psychic Communication Network
It also served as a kind of psychic communication network for the men. Every day the men would go out hunting. They would not really talk to one another but then when they would come back and talk to their wives or their women they would be clued in on all of the stuff that was happening within the tribe including what all the other men were doing and thinking.
This kind of a ancient human gossip allowed for men to understand everything that was going on in the tribe without needing to talk to one another. Just like all of our other instincts this gossip instinct helped us very much way back in the days before agriculture but it can easily destroy us today.
At the end of the movie after this priest’s reputation had had been absolutely obliterated by the rumors of these nuns. They finally found out why he had been transferred and the reason he had been transferred was because of something that had nothing to do with him.
Can You Forgive Me?
This one nun was in a room with him she felt absolutely horrified because of how she was the main element in spreading these rumors about him having sex with little kids.
She asked him, she said, “Can you ever forgive me?” He paused then he looked out the window and he said:
“Imagine if you have a pillow filled with feathers and you open up the pillow. The feathers will be carried away by the wind and you will never ever be able to get them back.”
What he was referring to was how gossip ideas about other people tend to spread from brain to brain just like feathers on the wind. Because gossip is an ancient instinct we tend to have an instinctive belief that the gossip that we hear is actually true.
One Way Ride
This is why gossip spreads from brain to brain so quickly. This is why once gossiped ideas are spread out from brain to brain you can never ever get those ideas back. They will stay in those people’s brains forever.
Many other animals besides primates also have a kind of tit-for-tat system. Vampire bats, when they go out hunting, some of them will come home with a lot of blood, some of them will come home with no blood. The ones with a lot of blood will share blood with those with no blood and those that get blood will remember that and they will return the favor a few days later.
It’s almost like vampire bats have liked is very ancient blood credit system. It’s very easy to see how this ancient instinct in modern humans is where we get the idea from debt and money and owing people money and borrowing money.
Find Them And Kill Them
Once you carefully spread all of the false stories to all of the people in your organization, then you simply wait and see which story was leaked and once you see the story that was leaked, you can check to see which particular information that story has.
Because you gave slightly different information to each person you’ll know exactly who the leaker is and then you can kill them.
