Tricky Applicant
There is this guy a few years ago who wanted to get a job at a very sought after tech company, one of the big tech companies. But he didn’t want to go through the same motions that everyone else did because he would be put in the same pool of applicants as everybody else.
He wanted to distinguish himself from everybody else and what he did was he found out the hiring manager, the guy that was to hire him. He bought that guys name as an ad word from Google. When the guy typed his own name into Google that ad would pop up. The title of this ad was, “Why are you searching your own name?”
When that guy clicked on the ad, the guy’s letter to him opened up and he explained why he should be hired.
Self Reinvention
There was this guy that had a very boring life. It was okay. He wasn’t destitute. He made a decent amount of money. He had a decent apartment. He had a decent set of friends. He had had a few decent relationships, but he didn’t really see anything changing.
He decided he wanted to make a very big change in his life. He was inspired by that TV show The Americans, which has a couple of deep cover KGB agents who came to the United States. They pretended to be Americans, had a family they went through life as Americans but they were actually these KGB agents.
He did something like that. He didn’t join the KGB but he did come up with a completely new identity for himself. He came up with a completely new personality for himself, he spent a lot of time writing this as if someone would write a novel and come up with a character. He did that but he did it for himself.
Make It Believable
He spent a lot of time making it very believable and he spent a lot of time practicing having conversations as if he was this new personality with this new background.
A lot of people like the idea of falling in love. A lot of people would love to fall in love, at the same time that something that everybody craves but it’s kind of hard to figure out how to make that happen. One thing that can be a little confusing is the words we use to describe these things like love and relationships.
On the one hand you can say you’re building a relationship with that kind of requires that you are in a relationship. One thing that’s very instructive is to look at the metaphors we use when describing the process of going from not in love with somebody to being in love with somebody. We describe that process as falling in love.
Metaphors Aren’t Reality
That gives us a clue of how our subconscious minds think metaphorically about the process of falling in love. It’s something that we fall into which means it happens without expecting it. It happens unexpectedly it has to happen unexpectedly. And in love, the preposition “in” indicates that our subconscious looks at love as a container.
One metaphorical description that kind of seems like falling in love would be like walking down the streets and falling into an open hole like those videos on YouTube where you have people walking down looking at their phones and they fall into a fountain or an open manhole cover.
That old metaphysical question if a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound, according to the laws of science, the clear answer, the scientific answer is no because sound does not exist in the abstract.
Sound Is Only In Your Head
Sound is a transformed energy function that only exists inside of our head. If there is no human in the forest then all there are a bunch of pressure waves moving through the air and pressure waves moving through the air are not sound until they are transformed into something that we call sound.
Even more confusing the stuff that we consciously perceive is about .1% of all the stuff that is actually happening all around us. To make things even more confusing not only do we have this metaphorical representation of what’s going on around us inside of our brains that we give a meaning to that is completely subjective.
Which means you can go inside your own brain you can find all your different metaphorical constructions and you can read build them you can rebuild your memory you can rebuild how you experience reality you can rebuild what you think might happen in the future because there’s a lot more leeway than most people realize.
Can’t Jump Into A Hole
If you are to consciously decide that you wanted to fall into a hole you’d have to go to a section of town that has a lot of holes and you would have to not look for holes. If you’re walking towards a hole in your staring right at the whole it would be impossible to fall into the hole.
When he finally moved to the new town it felt kind of strange at first but he was surprised how much everybody believed in this new fake personality that he had built up for himself. After a couple of weeks he started to forget his old personality. After a couple of months he had a much better life and he completely slipped into this new personality so much that he completely forgot who he was before.
The moral of that story is if you want to get something that a lot of other people want to get you have to do something that not a lot of other people are doing. In order to get that the more you can distinguish yourself from everybody else the more likely you’ll be able to get whatever you want.
