There’s a guy that I work with that recently had a kid and it’s his first kid and you can see the absolute dramatic change before and after he’s had this kid. If you have children yourself you know that nothing will change your outlook on life like having a child.
From a objective perspective there’s a lot of very subtle very clear differences. Before he was always early to work. He was always in a very positive outgoing mood. He was always quick with the joke. He was always wearing pressed shirts with his tie tied very nicely, his top button was always buttoned.
Now he’s always tired. He always has this look on his face like he’s running behind. His shirt is always wrinkled. His tie is usually incorrectly tied. His top button is never buttoned.
There’s an idea in therapy of past life regression where if you take a person that has a problem if you take a client that has a problem and put them through past life regression hypnosis you can find and solve their problems.
Whether this is actually a true thing or not is really not really important. Really good therapists, they know how to work within somebody’s metaphor. Even if the therapist themselves doesn’t believe in past lives if they are still capable of working within that metaphor it can be a very useful tool to solve people’s problems.
I have a friend who very much believes in past lives. He has three children and he’s made it a point when each child was old enough to have an adult like conversation to ask his kids if they remember anything that happened to them before they were born.
No Idea Dad
The first two kids didn’t really give them any interesting answers. They kind of made up some stuff in the moment, but his third kid gave him a very interesting, very detailed very clear answer of what it was like before he was born.
There is a very common idea in metaphysics that we are not physical beings having a spiritual experience we are spiritual beings having a physical experience. For most people that’s the end of that. They think that, they seem to think that once they have this knowledge that we are actual spiritual beings having a physical experience that supposed to have some impact.
Just knowing that is supposed to have some impact. But a deeper question might be to imagine that we are spiritual beings and as a spiritual being we would have unlimited knowledge. We would have unlimited peace and understanding. We would have zero stress. We would have zero anxiety. We would experience zero struggle.
Spiritual Or Physical?
The question is from that perspective, from spiritual beings having an infinite amount of peace and understanding and zero stress and struggle and anxiety, why would we decide to become physical beings? What is it that we want to experience as physical beings that we cannot experience as spiritual beings?
One answer might be that we might want to experience the human physical experience of overcoming obstacles. There’s not a lot of things that are more fulfilling than overcoming obstacles along the path to your own chosen objective.
If you’ve ever faced a significant struggle towards your own chosen objective and you’ve been able to overcome that struggle that’s a very good feeling. Finally achieving objectives is a very good feeling.
Path Of True Happiness
There’s not a lot of feelings that’re like that. There’s a lot of ideas from psychology that in order to achieve actual true happiness is to be on the path to achieving some type of objective and so if that is indeed the reason that we as spiritual beings became physical beings as so we could experience that happiness on the path on objective.
It seems that a lot of people that say that truism, that we are really spiritual beings having a physical experience, that seems to be a common excuse for not trying to overcome an objective. Like you had this objective you have a lot of obstacles on the way to that objective and the you give up because after all you’re a spiritual being in the end you’ll be a spiritual being in so what’s the point of trying.
Maybe the entire point of being physical beings is to overcome those obstacles so that we can achieve objectives.
I Was Dead…
The last thing he remembers is being on a field with a lot of other fallen soldiers of some kind of a battle long before any kind of modern weaponry. He vaguely remembers laying on this field being just about to die with all of these other dead soldiers.
Then some entity came up to him took him by the hand and said it’s time to go. That’s the last thing he remembered before being born.
It’s always interesting when you have something like past life regressions that it could be something that’s absolutely true or could be a component of our own ability to come up with any kind of self-deception that’s designed to protect ourselves.
Recycled Lives Are Real
For example there are people that absolutely and utterly believe in the absolute objective truth of having lived past lives. It also could be some way to kind of externalize any kind of very early trauma.
If you’ve had some very early trauma in your life there was particularly painful, taking that trauma and re-creating that same structure but in a past life scenario might make it easier to address that trauma and solve that trauma. Past lives could be a function of our mind to protect ourselves or they could be a very real very objectively true thing.
What’s interesting about my friend from work is that there’s two kind of responses to the sudden change in his behavior. Those of us that don’t have kids seem to have a lot of kind of admiration and respect for this guy. If you don’t have kids and you have a friend that has kids is kind of a cool thing.
Two Types Of People
The people that do have children they have a much more misery loves company attitude. Like they have some kind of knowing about his life and what is life is going to be.
Like they want to look at him and say, “You will never get any more sleep and you will never ever have any money. Welcome to my world!”
