Harry Potter Discovery
Recently I found this fantastic bar. I found it by accident. It was almost like a Harry Potter bar because on the outside it doesn’t look like anything. It’s just a simple door in between a restaurant and a drycleaners.
I walked in just wondering what was on the other side. I thought it was going to be maybe a hallway or a stairwell or something but it was his huge cavernous very plush very nice bar.
I went in and sat down. There is only a couple of people in there and they all kind of looked at me for a split second, kind of to study me. I sat down and I started talking to the owner who was working behind the bar he told me that he was a retired software engineer.
It had always been his dream to own a bar ever since he was a kid in high school. He wanted to own a very chill, very relaxed bar that wasn’t like a very popular crammed with people type of bar. One of his last projects paid off very well he was able to buy this place.
Operating At A Loss
He operated it at a loss about having to worry about money because he had so much money because of his last project. He was telling me about some of his more interesting projects that he worked on.
One of the more interesting ones was with this neurosurgeon and that neurosurgeon was trying to develop a memory implant chip that would give people the ability to have a photographic memory. To just look at something and then later be able to recall that at will without needing to think. Without needing to put any effort into the process.
He figured he would study a little bit about human memory and then he would have this software engineer write some software onto the small chip and embed this chip into people’s brains. If this chip proved to be safe and if it actually helps people to remember everything to have a photographic memory he could make a lot of money.
Human Memory Makes No Sense
The problem was the more he studied human memory the more confusing it became. As it turns out human memory is something that nobody really understands. Human consciousness is something that nobody really understands.
He did a couple of experiments that had results that seem very very strange and the more of these experiments that he did the stranger they seemed.
For example he would have people predict what would happen if they walked into a room and they would compare their predictions with the actually experienced.
Then they would reverse the experiment. They had people staying in a room, they would leave the room wait a couple minutes and then try to remember what had happened in the room.
Remembering The Future
They would compare that memory to what had actually happened and as it turns out the way we think about the future and the way we think about the past are both very very similar.
We have this underlying assumption that we move forward in time that the past has actually happened and we remember the past and that we move into the future and since the future is uncertain we can only predict it.
As it turns out when you compare the accuracy of our predictions to the accuracy of our memories they’re almost identical. There some experiments in human consciousness that indicate that our consciousness is really just a storytelling device.
They hook up equipment to people and they have people make decisions and do things and it turns out that the sequence of events is not at all like we imagine the sequence of events is.
The Storytelling Device
What really happens is our mind body system decides to do something and our mind body system starts to do that thing and only after our mind-body system starts to do that thing does our consciousness made aware of what’s happening.
Our consciousness has the job of coming up with a reason why we are doing that but our consciousness has to come up with a reason why we are doing that after we’ve already started doing it. Almost everything that we think we’re doing is really some kind of a made up story by our conscious minds.
What this neurologist found out through these future and past experiments he postulated that time does not travel the way we think it does time does not flow from the past into the future it might not flow at all.
In fact he thinks that the our conscious mind is really not a storytelling device but it is a hallucination device. Our basic assumption about time is flawed anyways because our conscious mind only gets involved after we start doing something.
Time Doesn’t Exist
Our conscious minds have to pretend that we know what was happening before we started to do things. Since it only knows was going on until after we started doing things and it’s hallucinating anyway so making the next step that the flow of time is not what we think it is really not that big of a leap.
Of course the more this neurologist studied these things the more he did experiments like this the more he realized that he was nowhere near as close as he thought he was in creating this photographic memory implant chip.
From a software programming standpoint it gets even more confusing because all of software is predicated on a specific forward flow of time. Software is filled with these cause-effect if-then statements and cause-effect if-then statements are predicated on a forward flow of time.
If there is no such thing as time and our consciousness is just hallucinating everything than what is software?
Keep This A Secret
There’re big signs all over this guy’s bar that make people promise that there’s no tweeting. There’s no reporting of the location to social media. You can’t tell your friends when you leave you have to be in the neighborhood.
You have to discover this bar on accident. He tells everyone that’s the price they have to pay for enjoying this nearly free food and free drinks and fantastic stereo system. Always never crowded bar never waiting to sit and relax with just a few people the price for that is they can’t tell anybody about this.
He wants people to purposely forget where this bar is. When they leave and they have to find it again by accident so every time they come and it’s as if they are discovering this for the first time.
