Boring Movie
The other night I was watching this interesting movie on TV. It started out interesting but then it started to get kind of boring. A lot of the conversations that characters were having were outside in this very beautiful garden.
Because the movie was boring, I stopped paying attention to what they were talking about and I started to pay attention to all of the different plants in this garden. I started to kind of fantasize about what would be like to grow my own garden.
A couple days later I went down to my local nursery to see what it would take to grow my own garden.
Noah’s Ark For Seeds
They have these massive seed warehouse up in Antarctica. They’re kind of collectively owned by all of the different world governments. In this seed warehouse they have every seed that is ever been created. They have a whole bunch of them just in case there’s some kind of cataclysmic collapse of society and they’ll be able to regrow whatever they need to regrow.
One of the more interesting things that happened in human history was when humans first discovered how to deliberately grow certain foods. There was kind of a Goldilocks time period after the last ice age ended. This was before they invented large agriculturally based societies. There was a very few number of people, but there was a lot of very easy to get food.
Food that was just kind of naturally growing everywhere. Because there were so few people, it was very easy to just go out and forage and get what they needed to stay alive. This is what a lot of historians believe was the actual conditions that later led to the story of the garden of Eden. When everything was so easy and nobody needed to work and they just had to pick the fruit that you wanted to eat.
Too Many People
After people started to grow too large in number, once people, the amount of people, started getting larger and larger, this naturally growing food wasn’t enough to support everybody. This forced early humans to figure out a way to grow stuff deliberately.
To figure out how to get exactly what they wanted out of the ground. For a long time this is a very very big problem because they had to spend a lot of generations through trial and error trying to figure out how to do this. The process of having these garden of Eden conditions to the part where they had these huge societies.
It was a very very long slow very gradual process, but every time they figured out something that worked, every time they figure out how to deliberately grow stuff, how to deliberately create wealth by using their information, by using their intellect, by combining their knowledge of early botany to purposely deliberately grow stuff out of the ground they would write it down so future generations could learn how to do this. Could read this and learn how to create wealth from the ground.
Expert House Flipper
There was this guy who was a house flipper. He was very very good at flipping houses. He had a very high success rate. He had developed a system that allowed him to choose the best houses the flip without ever having to visit the houses.
He had done for so long he knew exactly what to look for and the only time he actually needed to visit these houses was when he was going to hire his crew to come fix them. He had to go there himself inspect these houses on his own and just kind of figure out exactly what needed to be done in.
Hire his crew, give them a list of instructions and then when they were finished he would flip the house and sell it and make money. He did this several times a month. Except this one house that he visited he actually liked the house very much. He liked the neighborhood very much. He liked the neighbors very much.
I Think I’ll Live Here
He decided he wanted to live in this house. He was kind of rummaging around the basement and there was a lot of stuff left over. The people that owned the house before had lost it in a foreclosure. They just left everything in the house, they didn’t have a lot of money so they couldn’t really hire moving trucks and they just left with the bare necessities. They left a lot of stuff behind.
He was scounging around in the basement and he found this box of all of these old books. He found this one old book that was filled with what he had first thought was hand written recipes. But it turns out this book was filled with hand written magic spells.
He thought it was may be some kind of a project. Maybe one of the previous residents was a budding fantasy writer. He found one of these magic spell recipes and it seemed very very interesting. He decided to follow it just for fun.
Recipe For Wealth
It basically instructed him to get several small objects, raw material objects that were easy to acquire, and then wrap them in a very specific kind of cloth, which was again very easy to acquire. Once he got all of these raw materials, once he wrapped these raw materials in this particular cloth he was to bury these in the Earth at a depth of 3 feet.
Once he buried these in the Earth at a depth of 3 feet he would have to wait for three months. He was kind of doing this kind of as a joke with himself not really expecting much. Then after three months had passed he dug this up and the raw materials had turned into gold nuggets and the gold nuggets were about 10 ounces of pure gold which was about $12,000.
He repeated this process again and again he got 10 ounces of gold nuggets. He repeated this process over and over and over. He didn’t really spend a lot of time trying to figure out why it worked. He didn’t worry about trying to scale up because he had been a businessperson for a long time.
Protect Your Income Stream
He knew that when you found a very profitable income stream the last thing you wanted to do was tell all your friends about it because they would reproduce it and something would go wrong and the income stream would stop.
He was very careful not to make the mistake of the old couple that found the goose that laid the golden egg. they wanted to cut the goose open to get more gold more quickly but they ended up killing their income stream.
He was very very patient and for the rest of his life he lived at this house. Every three months he would collect raw materials, he would bury these raw materials in the earth and he would wait for the earth to transform these raw materials into real wealth.
Fine Tuned Wealth Creation
After a while these early societies had really kind of fine tuned the way to specifically deliberately consciously get real wealth out of the earth. How to specifically clear a large area of land to specifically work this land to get this land to produce exactly the kind of wealth they wanted.
Once they figured out how to do this this was the kind of foundational discoveries that later led to large societies and all the other wealth that large societies made.
I guess in the worst case scenario if there’s some kind of a cataclysmic collapse of our environment and there’s only a couple million people left or maybe even a couple thousand people left they’ll be able to make their way to this grain storehouse.
In Case of Zombie Apocalypse
This seed storehouse in Antarctica and they won’t have to reinvent the wheel. Essentially what this seed warehouse in Antarctica represents is the sum total of human knowledge on how to put stuff in the ground and patiently wait for to be turned into something new.
After I spent about 20 minutes inside of this nursery I realized that being able to create a beautiful garden in my backyard was a lot more complicated than I had anticipated.
Luckily they have classes there every weekend. You can take these classes. You can learn new skills. You can learn how to combine your patience with the magic of the earth to create beautiful things.
