If you were to study martial arts it would be taking something at the level of unconscious competence, raising it to the level of conscious competence and then rebuilding it at the level of conscious competence and then dropping it back down into the level of unconscious competence.
The first level of unconscious competence would be the level at which we are all pretty much programmed to defend ourselves. Sporadically and chaotically and not very effectively. The more you practice anything specifically and consciously, the more you take something that’s natural and automatic and elevate it to the level of conscious competence and look at how you’re doing things so that you can improve how your doing things.
From the time when humans were foragers to the time when humans were farmers was about 1000 years. The way it worked was after the last Ice Age there was a lot of naturally growing grain and wheat and cereals in the area that’s called the fertile crescent.
Because there was so much naturally growing stuff and so few people nobody had to worry about how to grow stuff. They just went out and got whatever they wanted. There was even so much natural stuff that people figured out how to make bread. They figured out how to collect naturally growing wheat. They figured out how to grind it into flour and they figured out how to cook it in the bread.
This all happened before they needed to figure out how to deliberately grow stuff. But over the course of about 1000 years the stuff that was naturally growing started to decrease and the number of people started increased. Slowly, gradually, ancient humans had to learn how to deliberately get what they wanted from the earth.
Psychologists tell us that the main purpose of communication is to persuade. Every time you have an idea in your head and you want to put that idea into somebody else’s head, by some type of verbal communication, the intention is to get them to do something or think something because they now had that idea in their head. This indicates that we always have some type of intention of what we want the other person to do.
Sales By Commission
Once they get our idea into their head but most of us are not very good at persuading, most of us don’t have a lot of skills of persuading, most people would be terrified to have a job in sales and they and their salary would be based on the hundred percent commission.
Most of us have this natural intention to persuade every time we speak but at the same time were not that good at doing it. Most people never examine the thoughts in their head. Most people never examine the quality of the thoughts in their head. Most people never examined the sequence of thoughts in their head.
The structure of the sequence of the thoughts in their head. But just like any other unconscious behavior, we can elevate this to the level of conscious competence, rebuild it and then drop it back down to the level of unconscious competence. When you drop it back down to the level of unconscious competence it will be a much better skill.
If you do this with your thinking you can start to examine the thought structures in your head, you can start to examine the common types of cause effect chains that happen naturally. You can start to look at your thought structure trees that lead from certain thoughts into different branches of thoughts and different ideas from the different branches of thoughts and when you see how these thought structures grow naturally in your head.
You can elevate this process up to the level of conscious confidence. Re-define how you think. Redefine how you create these cause effect sequences in your brain. Redefine how you create these thoughts structured trees in your brain. When you do that you can think with a lot better quality. You can think with a lot better concepts. You can improve the creativity of your brain. You can improve the intellect of how your thoughts organize themselves.
When you drop this back down to the level of unconscious competence you don’t have to worry again. If you could just relax and let your brain do all of your thinking for you. When your brain does all of your thinking for you it will be a much better quality of thoughts.
Persuade Much Better
You can learn how to persuade a lot better. Right now if you have an intention and you want somebody else to help you satisfy that intention most of us don’t have a very clear idea of how to make that happen. We just kind of walk up and hope for the best. Once you learn how to persuade other people once you learn the basic structure of persuasion.
Once you learn how to elicit their basic needs structure in their brain and reformulate your intention so it meets that specific need structure in their brain and once you practice this new persuasion communication structure and practice it enough it’ll drop back down to the level of unconscious competence.
This means you can do the same exact procedure. Have an intention in your brain. You can walk up to somebody and start talking and you’ll be much more effective of getting anybody to do whatever you want. You won’t need to worry about anything. You’ll just show up you’ll just talk you’ll notice that everybody is naturally doing what you want because you’ve re-calibrated your persuasion as it exists at the level of unconscious competence.
Foragers To Farmers
Eventually the early farmers figured out how to grow stuff deliberately out of the ground. This is something that humans have essentially been improving ever since ever since the first Ice Age ended in the Fertile Crescent 10,000 years ago. Figuring out how to maximize the number and quality of calories humans can deliberately and consciously and specifically get out of the ground is something that we’ve been improving ever since then.
Bruce Lee famously said that before Jeet Kun Do, a punch is just a punch. During Jeet Kun Do, a punch is a complicated mix of balance and focus and energy and intention. After Jeet Kun Do, a punch is just a punch but it’s a much deadlier and much more effective punch.
The more skills you do this with, the more effective you will be as a human and all of these highly effective skills will be operating at the level of unconscious competence. All you really need to do is move through the world and watch your outcomes happen on their own.
