Waiting For The Bus
So the other day I was at the bus stop. I wanted to go downtown and pick something up. I didn’t want to drive. I did one take an uber. I wanted to kill some time. I wanted to spend two or three hours.
I had a lot of stuff to do but I got it done a lot sooner than I thought and while I was waiting at the bus stop I started talking to this guy.
He was telling me about his finance company. He works for this finance company. He’s an accountant and they do services they provide services for companies that aren’t big enough to have their own finance department.
They do things like budgets and payroll management and other financial services. He was telling me that recently they had this new boss kind of coming out of nowhere.
Everybody Is A Subsidiary
The company he works for is a subsidiary. Like many subsidiaries they have a larger company that owns them. If you trace all of these smaller subsidiary companies up to their ultimate owners you find there’s really only a handful of companies that owned like 80% of all the other smaller companies.
He is one of the smaller companies. I guess these larger global corporations are very careful to make sure there’s no kind of paper trail between these two companies so they can operate as separate entities.
One day they had a new boss. All they were told was at this boss came from upper management. He showed up unexpectedly on a Monday and they were all called into the meeting room on Monday morning and they were just told that we have a new boss he was sent here by upper management and he wants to talk to each one of you individually.
Of course this made everybody very very nervous and they all had questions and they were told that you can ask any questions in your private one-on-one meeting.
So, What’s This All About?
When he went in there to talk to this guy this guy looked at him and said I just wanted to tell you that you have a very unique skill. You have a very unique ability. There’s been several instances in your past where you have overcome obstacles.
These obstacles are kind of unique. If you decided not to overcome obstacles nobody would know and when you did make the decision to overcome obstacles only you knew. This tells me that there’s something about you. That you place a great importance on your ability to overcome obstacles. Especially when nobody knows if you succeed or fail.
That tells me that your definition of yourself is tied to how well you succeed in the world. Most people have a self-definition kind of based on imagination. They go through life redefining their self-definition kind of like painting the target around the arrow which doesn’t really allow them to achieve much success.
Arrows To Targets
Because your unique history, where you have this inner resilience that pushes you to overcome obstacles for your own reason, to me that says that you are going to continue to succeed out into your future.
I know there’s going to come a time when this small company is too small for you. Companies like this very much depend on you. I just wanted to tell you that I recognize that within you. That I appreciate that trarit within you.
That trait is very very important. That trait makes you a very very valuable person. There will come a time in the future where this trait is much more valuable than simply working here. I just wanted to tell you that while you’re here we appreciate your efforts.
This guy was kind of a little bewildered because he couldn’t quite make sense of what this guy told him. He said shortly after this upper manager came the company started making a lot more money.
New Management – New Profits
They started making a lot more profits. They started getting a lot more contracts with a lot bigger companies. This guy got several raises very very quickly. He’s now making a lot more money than he used to.
When the bus came and we got on the bus I realized that this conversation we had was kind of based on a temporary external situation. Whenever you have conversations based on temporary external situations, whenever those temporary external situations cease to exist the conversations that they are based on also ceased to exist.
We both, both he took his seat, I took my seat, I didn’t really ask him he didn’t ask me where we were going. We got on the bus, the kind of reason for having a conversation just kind of vanished.

I realize that a lot of these conversations that you have, they kind of pop-up like these randomly occurring organic events that can be extremely valuable if you decide to look for them.
