Meaning Is Subjective
Most farmers would agree that rain is a good thing. Most elementary school kids on a Saturday morning would agree that rain is a bad thing.
Meaning is something that is very subjective, very flexible and very relative. One of the best skills you can develop is the ability to consciously choose and consciously hold onto any specific meeting in any given situation.
This is a very good skill but it does take quite a bit of practice.
What Is Soceity?
One of the most common meaning battles that is existed throughout history is the meaning of society. On one side you have the idea that society is a family and within this family there’s a certain amount of obligations and responsibilities and benefits and promises.
The other side of the argument is that there is no such thing as society. That there are only individuals and each individual has certain promises and abilities and obligations and responsibilities but only to themselves.
One of the reasons that economics is called the dismal science is because it forces us to acknowledge that everything costs something.
Benefits Of Each Meaning
The benefits from the society is a family idea is that every safety net protects you but also kind of constrains you a little bit in reducing the amount of freedom.
The benefit of that there’s no such thing as society is that while you do have a maximum amount of freedom you don’t have any guarantee of being successful. There is no safety.
Cost Benefit Analysis
As individuals it’s our responsibility to look at each situation and weigh the costs and benefits are on our own and decide which is best.
If you can develop the ability to choose and maintain any meaning in any given situation that is essentially the main ingredient in maintaining frame control.
As I’m sure you know having a strong frame will allow you to get almost any outcome you want. The stronger your frame is the easier of an outcome will be able to get. You will become more persuasive you will become more seductive.
Emotions Affect Meaning
A very interesting idea from biology and neurology is that several studies have shown that our emotional state has a huge impact on the meeting we give to events.
If you have a negative emotional state you will give a certain meaning to a certain event. If you have a positive emotional state you will give a different meaning to that same event.
Choose Emotions First
One useful trick in maintaining strong frame control is to decide before you go into a situation what emotion you’d like to have as an outcome from that situation and then choose to have that emotion before you go into that situation.
Choosing that emotion beforehand will help you maintain that frame and I will become a self fulfilling prophecy.
