Called Me In A Panic
A friend of mine called me a couple of weeks ago and absolute panic. She told me she was pregnant. She said a whole bunch of other stuff, terrible was happening, but she couldn’t really calm herself down enough to explain exactly what was happening. So, I went over to pick her up to see if maybe I could help.
There’s a lot of mythologies that start off with the central character being found as a baby floating in a river. Or being found as a baby somewhere. Moses is probably the most famous. I think Hercules was also found as a baby. Romulus and Remus, the alleged mythological founders of Rome were twins that were raised by wolves.
On a greater extent, the heroes journey, as described by Joseph Campbell, has the main hero starting out always as an orphan. Harry Potter was an orphan. Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz was an orphan. Luke Skywalker was orphan. Neo was an orphan.
Orphan Origins
A lot of famous movie characters, if you dig into their past, even though they’re not really explained or fully flushed out into the movie, they’re almost always orphans. The reason for this is, this is because we ourselves always feel like we are kind of lost and we need some kind of direction.
The one character, the one archetype that we tend to most identify with is the orphan. That is a youth that is in a comfortable but kind of boring situation. Then they are forced outside of their comfort zone and they’re forced to go on some kind of a journey.
There’s this one female pastor in this church in the small town in the Midwest. She speaks in tongues while she preaches. There’s a lot of churches that are Pentecostal churches or charismatic churches where the congregation starts to speak in tongues because this is what happened at Pentecost.
Pentecost and Babel
When the people gathered and the heavens opened and the people were influenced by God and they started to speak the language of heaven. This is kind of a closing of a loop, so to speak, of the original Tower of Babel when humans tried to build a tower so tall it would reach the heavens and God got angry and God punished everybody by suddenly making everyone speak in a language that nobody else could understand.
That loop was closed at Pentecost when everybody got together and spoke the language of heaven. This is what a lot of churches do spontaneously. If you’ve ever been to a Pentecostal church or a charismatic church with the congregation starts to speak in tongues it’s a very interesting experience.
This particular church, the pastor would speak in tongues and everybody would listen. Everybody would understand. Not only does she speak in tongues but everybody seems to understand the meaning of what she’s saying. It’s not something that is being inspired. It is a direct communication from the angelic-spirit world.
Angels and Dreams
There’s a lot of stories of people being inspired by dreams. By angels that come to them in dreams. But this scenario feels very much like she’s speaking directly to the congregation. She’s no longer her own self, her entire body has been kind of taken over by this angelic entity. She’s not just channeling somebody. She is somebody.
The entire congregation seems to understand exactly what she’s saying. The experience is incredibly profound. The truths that people receive can only be received on a subconscious level because they are too profound to complex too complicated for our conscious minds to understand. They hit everyone with an incredible amount of heavenly and spiritual power.
The heroes journey, once it starts off from the origins of the orphan, are always very similar. The orphan is forced out onto a journey. The orphan has to find a new collection of friends. The orphan almost always finds out that he has a superpower that he didn’t know before.
Hollywood Blockbuster
All of the modern Hollywood movies that follow the heroes journey template seem to recognize this. If you are a hero you discover that you have powers that you did know before. That part of your hero’s journey is to discover how to use your powers. How to use your gifts. How to use your powers to confront and overcome the evil that it is your destiny to confront and overcome.
If you look at all of these heroes journey movies, this is exactly what happens. The hero has powers. The hero makes friends. He and the friends find out who this evil entity is and they have a battle with him and they destroy him.
Many stories start off with this baby floating in the river because this allows for this idea that the baby grows up into somebody that is both normal mortal and also divine. If you have a baby that is born of normal parents then it’s kind of hard to believe that they’re divine.
Poof! A Baby!
But if a baby just pops up out of nowhere, it’s very easy to believe that this baby has divine origins. In a lot of mythologies, they’ll have a baby that is born from a mother that is a virgin birth. This happened to Jesus. This even happened to Darth Vader. Darth Vader was born of a mother that didn’t have a father.
You have this idea in many different ancient mythologies. You have a baby that is born either from an unknown source and the baby just pops up or the baby comes from a virgin birth and becomes half man half God and turns into some type of Savior.
After my friend finally calmed down, she wasn’t quite sure if she was pregnant. She said she took a test, but she wasn’t sure that she did it right because she was so nervous. So we went to a pharmacy. She bought a couple of the pregnancy tests. She went to the bathroom. She took them, several of them, just to make sure she wasn’t pregnant.
Second Order Gaslighting
It turns out that she was kicked out of her shared apartment with her boyfriend. But what had happened was not quite as disastrous as she made it sound. The guy she was dating wasn’t that great. He had been gas-lighted by his ex-girlfriend.
The stuff that he said to her was mostly because of the stuff that she said to him. It turns out that she really only needed a place to live and she was just thinking in terms of the worst possible scenario. She started to imagine that she was going to get pregnant and because she was pregnant she was going to lose her job and she wouldn’t have any money.
She wouldn’t have a place to live. But it turns out she wasn’t pregnant. Because she wasn’t pregnant, she wasn’t going to lose her job. She called a couple of her friends and within an hour she found a place to live with somebody that she knows fairly well.
Worst Things Never Happen
It turns out that thing that Mark Twain allegedly said is that 90% of your fears will never happen.
