Clint Eastwood Samurai
There’s a lot of similarities between the Clint Eastwood cowboy character and a lot of man-with-no-name samurai characters. In fact a lot of the Western movies with Clint Eastwood were remakes of Japanese period piece Japanese samurai movies.
The idea that drives evolution is natural selection and you’ll find natural selection or artificial selection in a lot of different places. The structure is actually very common.
For example, if you imagine having an advertising campaign where you send out slightly different advertisements to different ZIP Codes and then you could measure which advertisement did the best by measuring which ZIP Code have the most sales. That will tell you which advertisement to keep and which ones do not keep.
Artificial Selection
If you publish a magazine and you want to find the right type of model to put on the cover, you don’t really need to do any research. You just need to keep trying different models and whichever model type sells the most magazines that’s going to be the winner. There is a less kind of an artificial way that the structure of natural selection happens.
A very common idea if you’re very angry at somebody, but you’re worried that if you try to talk to them about it you go beyond what needs to be said and you’ll say some things that you can’t take back, one common piece of advice in the situation is to write out a letter. To write the letter out not to give it to them but just to get all of your anger out on paper.
The recommendation is to write this letter as viciously as you can. Be as mean-spirited as you can. Get everything out on the paper. That way if you later decide to talk to the person, you will have already vented your viciousness and you have a much higher chance of having a more objective calm rational conversation.
Back To Nature?
One of the biggest misconceptions that humans have about nature is that we have this idea that nature is this kind of peaceful lovely romantic idea. In a lot of movies you’ll find that you see this kind of dichotomy between the evilness and in the quick paced lifestyle of the city and the calm relaxing lifestyle of nature.
In reality nature is way more evil, way more vicious than most people realize. Nature has animals that will murder other mother’s babies and trick the mothers into raising their own babies. Nature has animals like the wasp that will stun and paralyze another insect and lay their eggs inside of that insect while the paralyzed insect is still alive it can feel everything. The wasps babies will grow up inside of that insect.
Nature is this bacteria that gets inside of a mouse that tricks the mouse into thinking that cats are friendly people. The mouse will run towards the cat only to get eaten. This chemical parasite that does this is a parasite that can only reproduce inside the belly of a cat.
Dolphin Rapists
When dolphins decide to make baby dolphins they rape and kidnap female dolphins. But dolphins are also something that we think of as cute characters that are in cartoons and you can find them on children’s backpacks and happy stickers that represent these happy friendly playful dolphins. But dolphins are rapists and kidnappers.
Another animal that we think is so sweet and kind and beautiful is the swan. You can imagine a picture of two swans facing each other and the necks of the swans are forming this kind of nice heart-shape. There’s this idea that the swans are the ideal animal that represents true love and if you want to give your girlfriend a card and it has a picture of a two swans on the outside this will be a sweet romantic gesture.
But in reality when swans want to make baby swans they rape and sometimes murder female swans. This is one way to sort whether or not the female swan has genes that are strong enough to make it to the next generation. Often two male swans will rape a female swan and they’ll hold the female swans neck underwater.
Rapist Swans
According to the viciousness of Mother Nature, if the swan doesn’t die, if this swan doesn’t drown while she’s being gang raped, then her genes are strong enough to survive to the next generation.
Similarly, a lot of fish will have hundreds of babies and then the mother will eat half of her babies. The idea being that the babies are strong enough to swim away from their cannibal mother, they are strong enough to pass their genes on into the next generation.
Everywhere you look in nature you have all these creatures that are viciously trying to out rape and out murder and out cannibalize each other and the ones that survive are the ones that pass those genes onto the next generation.
Fittest Is Most Vicious
Of course, we don’t like to think in those terms so we give that process a very benign neutral sounding name like natural selection. But in nature natural selection often translate into a raping murder and cannibal contest.
Of course if you write that letter, that vicious letter, it’s not a good idea to mail it. It’s supposed to just help you get your thoughts together and separate the thoughts you want to communicate from the thoughts that you want to just get out of your head in and spend your vicious energy.
Sometimes people make the mistake (or maybe not a mistake) and actually mail the letter. Even worse are people that commit suicide and they write a letter just like that before they commit suicide. It’s the final fuck you to all of their friends and family.
F-You Mother Effers!
It’s like their way of having a very vicious very definitive very unarguable last word.
If you do artificial selection for advertising you have a specific technique that you’re searching for. You have a specific metric that you are searching for but a natural selection, the one label that is probably the best to label all the animals and humans that have made it through from generation to generation is probably a resilience contest.
Whoever can survive the most without getting eaten, whoever can get the most food without dying, they will survive onto the next generation. Just because you are listening to this right now your ancestors were more vicious than everybody else that was alive at the time.
We Don’t Like Doubt
There’s a couple of reasons why we like the Clint Eastwood character. It’s not a very common character. Most hero characters in the hero’s journey, they have to feel some kind of doubt. They have to question whether or not they can beat the bad guy. In any kind of traditional hero’s journey movie they have to go through a period of what Joseph Campbell calls the belly of the whale.
They actually believe they might die. They actually believe that they don’t have enough skill to overcome the bad guy. Clint Eastwood and the samurai characters, and characters like Jack Reacher they never have any doubt.
This represents the idea that we humans like these characters that never have any doubt. That they’re going to destroy their enemies because we would like to believe that we will always destroy our enemies without ever having doubt ourselves.
