Wandering Downtown
A couple of weeks ago I was wandering downtown and I came across a clock museum. Now, I had seen this clock museum sign before and I had always assumed it was some kind of a clever marketing gimmick for a a watch shop or a clock shop but it turns out it’s an actual clock museum.
I went inside this clock museum. They had a lot of interesting timepieces on the wall. Old timepieces, recent timepieces, timepieces built with different technology. They had this one huge long kind of historical timeline of the invention of clocks.
There was a guy in the back getting ready to give his weekly Saturday seminar on the history of clocks and timekeeping. I went to the back and sat down. It turns out that the invention of the portable clock was to solve a very old problem that people had been trying to solve for a long time.
Reward For Invention
The problem wasn’t directly related to keeping time. The problem was something they needed to keep time for. It was a problem with the British Empire had put up a huge reward so that whoever could solve this problem would get the reward. The problem was solved by inventing a clock.
People are aware that Einstein came up with this theory of relativity while he was working in a patent office. Most people assume this is just some kind of a strange confluence of events. That Einstein the super genius was working in some government office and maybe on his lunch breaks he would think about things like relativity.
It turns out that this type of patents that he was working on and relativity have a lot in common. This was about the time when people started to invent clocks and a lot of the patents that Einstein was looking at had to do with clocks and various timepieces.
Special Relativity
If you know anything about special relativity you know it deals with time and thinking about time in a different way. Once upon a time there was an ancient kingdom that had discovered how to create a perpetual motion machine.
Most physicists, all physicists will tell you that perpetual motion is impossible. Any kind of piece of equipment that produces work is going to increase entropy and is going to need to have energy added to it to keep it going.
This makes the idea of perpetual motion impossible another way to describe increasing entropy as forward movement in time. In fact a lot of people consider these two statements to be equivalent.
Why Don’t We Remember The Future?
To say time moves forward is to say the same thing as entropy increases and you might say that entropy increases because time moves forward or you could say that time moves forward because entropy increases.
What this ancient kingdom had done was to create this small self-contained environment in which time didn’t flow at all and that allowed them to put within this self-contained bubble of frozen time a perpetual motion machine.
If time is not moving, then neither is entropy which means they’re allowed to get a continuous stream of free energy from this perpetual motion device. For the longest time this kingdom used it to create massive amounts of crops with little amount of work. They had a lot of wealth. They had a lot of advanced technology.
Give Up Free Energy
As their neighbors started to get more more powerful they realized that this free energy system would be used in negative ways. It would be used in ways that might end up destroying humanity.
They figured it would be a good idea to voluntarily take apart this free energy system, this perpetual motion machine that was inside of a frozen bubble of time. They took this machine apart. They took all of the pieces and scattered them in random secret places across their kingdom.
They destroyed all blueprints on how to build this machine. They destroyed all blueprints on how to build a perpetual motion machine. They destroyed all their plans and instructions on how to freeze time. They only recorded that they had done this for posterity.
Everybody’s Thinking About Time
One of the things that Einstein and all of the people in the world were thinking about at the time that he invented special relativity was that for the first time in human history you could live in one city and you could look at your clock and you could think about what time the was in all these other cities of the world.
Up until that point you had either use the local time, which was based on local traditions, or you had to use some kind of a big grandfather clock that was based on the pendulum and you didn’t really think about this grandfather clock which told you the time inside somebody’s house and think about the time somewhere else.
Once people had the ability to travel and keep time while they traveled this allowed them to think about time compared to traveling, compared to what time it was in other places. This is exactly what this theory of special relativity is about.
Flow Of Time Is Relative
The assumption was that time flows at the same speed no matter where you are. Of course Einstein proved that time flows based on relative conditions and so not necessarily does time flow in the same place here as it does somewhere else and this is based on how the respective speeds are between the two places.
This is essentially special relativity. The closer you go to the speed of light the slower you move through time. So time is actually a very relative thing and people were thinking about time is a relative thing in a different way when they were inventing clocks. People had about time and time zones meaning the time is here the time is two hours later somewhere else but time is flowing at the same speed here and there.
Einstein’s insight was time is not necessarily flowing at the same rate here or there. The one problem that the British government had desperately wanted to solve for several hundred years was how to fix longitude when one was sailing across the ocean. If you are in a ship sailing across the ocean it was very easy to figure out what the latitude was. You just had to check the stars and do some calculations.
Clocks On Ships
In order to calculate longitude you need to calculate distance and this required accurate speed and accurate time measurements. Up until that point that had been impossible but when they invented clocks this made measuring longitude very very easy.
If you only could measure latitude and you sailed back and forth across the ocean you couldn’t create very accurate maps. This is why when you look back at these old maps before they invented clocks there always is kind of random guesses about where stuff was but as soon as a invented clocks that people can carry on ships that made the maps much more accurate.
All this I learned in this one museum of clocks that I thought was some kind of a marketing gimmick.
