Swan Pond
There’s a park near my apartment. In this park there is a large pond and in the pond you’ll find some swans and sometimes some ducks. Usually on the weekends there are people feeding the swans and feeding the ducks.
I went down to this park a couple of weeks ago except the pond was under construction. They had drained half of the pond and they were putting in a fountain in the center, near the center, and on half of the pond where these very confused looking swans and no ducks.
I noticed that the construction crew was taking a break. It was around lunchtime and so I sat where I usually sit when I watch people feed the ducks and feed the swans and I started talking to one of the construction guys. I asked him how long of a project this was going to be.
How Much Longer?
He said about another two weeks. I asked him if he worked directly for the city if he worked for a private construction company that had to bid for projects with the city. he said he worked for a private construction company but because this was a relatively small town this private construction company always got the bids for this particular city.
I asked him how long he had done this and he said a couple of months. He seemed to be fairly old late 60s maybe. I asked him what he had done before this had he always done construction and he said he had done construction ever since he graduated high school.
He said when he learned construction after high school he started traveling with a group of nomadic construction workers. I’ve heard about this before. I read about this before. It turns out there’s always a certain percentage of people in any economy that essentially live the nomadic lifestyle.
Mobile Set Of Skills
They have whatever set of skills and instead of working in one city for one company and setting roots and ties to the community they just decide to travel. They are sometimes seasonal workers a lot of times are construction workers. Especially back during the early 2000’s the late 1990s with the housing boom.
There was a lot of housing builders that traveled around and for them life was really really lucrative. They could show up, they could work really hard for like a month, build a house get paid a lot of money, go to the next town built a whole bunch of more houses make a lot more money.
I asked the guy what it was like to be a nomad because I know that way back in our ancient history there was kind of a 50-50 chance, depending on when you are born, where you were born, of whether or not you could be a nomad or you could be settled in a kind of an agricultural community.
Love The Nomadic Lifestyle
He said it’s actually pretty cool to be a nomad because if you are a nomad every day you wake up you can look forward to a new experience every day. You wake up you can imagine what new things might happen that day. Every day you wake up you get excited because you’re going to go somewhere different it’s never the same thing.
It’s even better because you’re surrounded by the same kind of familiar people, especially if you have some type of skilled labor like construction worker. Because you tend to travel with the same crew over and over and over again so you’re kind of combining the best of both worlds.
You have the familiarity of a familiar crew that you can depend on and you can watch each other’s back. You also have the excitement of going somewhere different each day. You can go somewhere different each day if you can think about new things you want to do each day. You can look forward to your future with excitement and a sense of what’s going to happen that can make life very very interesting.
Government Or Private Companies?
I sked him whether he liked to work for the government or whether he like to work for private companies. He said well they each have their own pros and cons. Governments they tend to extend the jobs longer than they need to be and they tell you to hire more workers than you really need and they tend to pay you a lot more.
It’s definitely more comfortable working for the government. But when you work for private companies you always have to bid against other construction companies other construction groups and that means you always have to keep your skills sharp. Because when you keep your skills sharp when you’re always worried about learning new skills.
You’ll always be worth more money because the secret of being worth more money is to keep a sharp set of skills. On the long term he said working for private companies is better as you continuously increase your skills over time whereas in the short term working for a government might be better because you can kind of relax and make a lot of money.
Older and Easier Money
I didn’t really ask him this but it seems like the older you get the more you kind of tend to look for those government jobs we can kind of relax and make a lot of money.
Watching People Feed The Ducks
I’ll have to wait a couple weeks before they’re finished so I can go back. One of the things I like to do in the park as I like to watch the people feed the swans and I like to watch the people feed the ducks for me that’s a particularly interesting activity.
